Guided VSEPR Exercise

1. Draw the Shape Diagram for SbH3

a) Draw the Lewis Diagram for the molecule

b) Count the number of bonds around the central atom.

Count double or triple bonds as just a bond. 3 bonds around Sb

Count the number of lone pairs around the central 1 Lone Pair
atom

c) AX2 2 bonds no lone pairs=linear

AX3 3 bonds no lone pairs=trigonal planar
AX4 4 bonds no lone pairs=tetrahedral
AX3E 3 bonds 1 lone pair=pyramidal
Matches AX3E therefore pyramidal
AX2E2 2 bonds 2 lone pairs=V-shaped

If there are 2 central atoms, there may be 2 different

shapes

d) Draw it

2. Draw the Lewis diagram for Si2H4

e) Draw the Lewis Diagram for the molecule

f) Count the number of bonds around the central atom.
