Rodeo rovers: Dogs at NHSFR need a license

Summer sun
The heat this week hasnt
been friendly to people, not
to dogs.
Thompson is not the only
one who carefully watches
over her dogs, making sure
they survive the heat.
While sitting outside her
trailer reading, Cheyanne
Hays, whose younger broth-
er Chance is competing in
team roping this week, was
kept company by her familys
two dogs, a border collie
and a Corgi-Pomeranian-
Papillon mix. The two dogs
hid under the trailer hitch,
trying to stay cool in the
shade.
Ive been giving them lots
the rodeo dogs.
This is Rachel Halls sec-
ond year at the NHSFR to
watch her daughter Maddie
compete. Last year, Hall did
not rent a golf cart like most
contestants and instead rode
her bike around Cam-plex,
Rody at her side.
He loved the bike, she
said. But, Im not so sure
about the golf cart. We hav-
ent done that yet, and Im
not sure he would be into it.
Unlike Rody, Emma
Stapps 6-month-old
Labrador puppy loves the
golf carts. While waiting
for her cousin Jenna, who
is competing this week for
New Jersey, Savannah sat in
the passengers seat, panting
and wagging her tail.
Similarly, Christi
Donaldsons dog, Jade, has
been tagging along to rodeos
with the family for 10 years.
Hes been to high school
rodeos, junior rodeos, so
many rodeos, she trailed
off. She just curls up in the
seat for the car ride and is so
full of energy when we get
here.
Lost and found
While many are compan-
ion animals, not all rodeo
dogs are always by their
owners sides. Among the

Cyndi McLemore brushes

because he is constantly

fur. Back home in Arizona,
McLemore said she has
11 dogs as part of her
Dachshund rescue opera-
tion.
Weve taken her out in
the cart a few times already,
and she just loves it, Stapp
said.
Because she is such a
young dog, Stapp said they
had to stop at nearly every
gas station on their drive to
Gillette to let Savannah out.
While at Cam-plex, Stapp
has taken Savannah on fre-
quent walks and is trying to
train her.
Travel loving
Taking out a dog for walk-
and returned a few dogs,
and the rodeo was just get-
ting started.
To be allowed at Cam-
plex, all dogs must be up-to-
date on shots, have a valid
license and wear a red ban-
dana.

Hes a rescue, so he has
many names, she said. He
came with the name Titan,
and it was changed to Toby.
Now, I call him Dudley or
Bill.
But it isnt only the fox-
tail that has taken some
getting used to for Dudley.
Since arriving at Cam-plex
to see her granddaughter

was, she said, adding that

They really like to travel,
she said. As long as they
get to go in the truck, theyre
happy.
As an emotional sup-
port dog, Mia watches the
performances from the
Morningside Park arena,
Suggs said. Meanwhile,
Annie Rose stays patiently in
the trailer.
Theyre really easy-go-
ing, she said. We even
stayed in a hotel for a few
days here with them, and
there werent any issues.

she said. I cant get any-
where in a timely fashion.
Whites family breeds
bulldogs, and while attend-
ing the Trade Show at the
Wyoming Center, a couple
of people asked White to
call them if any new puppies
became available.
Its always like this when
Im with Izzy, she said.
Nor would the rodeo
be the same without them
along.
A
golf cart equipped with a pair of
GoPro video cameras zoomed
around the Cam-plex grounds
Tuesday blasting pop songs as famous
rodeo brothers Jake and Jess Lockwood
sang along.
It was their version of the popular
Carpool Karaoke schtick of late-night
TV show host James Corden.
Corden films himself with celebrities
signing along in the car. Taking that inspi-
ration, the Lockwood brothers decided to
their own NHSFR version of Golf Cart
Karaoke.
Jess is a professional bull rider and was
last years Rookie of the Year. Younger
brother Jake also is a bull rider and a
competitor for Montana this year in the
NHSFR.
The cart meandered around the camp-
grounds for about 15 minutes as the
Lockwood brothers and Janie Johnson
of Geronimo Productions scrolled through
songs on their phones, trying to find ones
they knew.
Im not the best at multitasking,
Johnson said. Sorry if I crash the cart
while singing.
Twice during the ride, Johnson stopped
the cart abruptly and all three riders got
out, ran around the vehicle and sat back
down in a new seat.
Come on, go, go, go! shouted Johnson
as they changed seats.
Johnson organized the singing golf ride
because I saw it on TV, and it seemed like
a great idea, she said.
The Lockwood boys are the hottest
thing in rodeo right now, she said. What
better way to promote rodeo than with
them?
Before leaving the Wyoming Center
for the golf cart karaoke, Johnson joked
around in the Media Center.
Everyone hydrated and ready to sing?
she asked, playing clips of Miley Cyrus
songs from her phone to get the brothers
pumped up.
During the cart ride, the karaoke cart
passed a cart of seven kids blasting music
from their own portable speaker that
drowned out the Lockwood brothers
voices. Several other groups drove by in
their carts, peering out at the loud singing,
but no one stopped to see what was going
on.
As the ride neared its end, a cameraman
filming the stunt for the National High
School Rodeo Association TV and social
media, commented on the singing.
Jess has dead-on pitch, but his brother
could do better, he said.
