NOTE
Purchase and install the Wi-Fi license before enabling Wi-Fi services. The license is not required if you
perform local maintenance over Wi-Fi.
In compliance with IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, the Wi-Fi processing unit of the BTS3911B works
on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, featuring high data rates, high receiver sensitivity, and long-
distance transmission.
l The BTS3911B supports concurrent 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands both supporting 3 x 3
MIMO.
l Compared with IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac supports 256QAM, 80 MHz bandwidth, and
longer aggregated MAC protocol data unit (AMPDU). With IEEE 802.11ac, the maximum
data rate over the Uu interface can be 1300 Mbit/s theoretically.
l The Wi-Fi processing unit has brilliant performance and high stability. The high
performance processor provides high throughput and load capability. The stable signal
strength and quality ensure a reliable wireless network. Automatic power tuning, automatic
frequency adjustment, and load balancing enable a flexible and stable large-scale network.
l The BTS3911B provides various network security features, such as protection against XML
denial-of-service (XDos) attacks, link integrity protection. The BTS3911B uses effective
encryption and authentication mechanisms to protect the network, such as WLAN

protected access (WPA), WPA2, and 802.1X.
Network Architecture
Figure 3-3 shows the position of a BTS3911B on a 3GPP network (LTE network in this example)
and Figure 3-4 shows the position of a BTS3911B on a WLAN.
As shown in Figure 3-3, the BTS3911B is the network access equipment of the LTE network
and one more multiple BTS3911Bs compose an E-UTRAN. The BTS3911B communicates with
UEs over the Uu interface and communicates with the LTE network over the PoE interface.
Figure 3-4 shows the BTS3911B as a bridge to forward data. The AC is responsible for user
access, authentication, routing, AP management, and security protocol configuration.
For details about AC installation, see SVA3200 product documents. For details about AC
deployment and maintenance, see SVA3200AC product documents.
Topologies
BTS3911Bs support the star topology over IP networking. Figure 3-5 shows the star topology.
Advantages:
l BTS3911Bs are directly connected to the MME or S-GW. The star topology decreases
networking complexity and facilitates engineering implementation, maintenance, and
capacity expansion.
l BTS3911Bs directly exchange data with the MME or S-GW. Signals travel through only
a few nodes, and therefore data transmission reliability is high.
Disadvantage: Compared with other topologies, the star topology requires more transmission
resources.
3.4 Architecture
The BTS3911B consists of a transmission and interface unit, main control unit, baseband
processing unit, clock unit, radio frequency (RF) unit, Wi-Fi processing unit, and antenna
processing unit.
l Transmission and interface unit: forwards data between a transport network and the base
station. This unit provides physical ports between the base station and the transport network,
and the user-plane interface between the base station and other NEs.
l Main control unit: controls and manages resources in the base station. This unit provides
the management-plane interface between the base station and the OMC, the control-plane
interface between the base station and other NEs, and the interface for controlling common
devices and negotiating common device information in a multimode base station.
l Clock unit: provides clock synchronization. The clock synchronization modes supported
by the BTS3911B are RGPS and IEEE 1588v2.
l Baseband processing unit: processes uplink and downlink baseband data.
l RF unit: performs modulation, demodulation, and data processing for baseband and RF
signals.
l Antenna processing unit: serves as an antenna for services and the sniffer module (used
only for detecting neighboring cells).
l Wi-Fi processing unit: processes Wi-Fi data traffic.

The O&M system manages, monitors, and maintains BTS3911B software, hardware, and
configuration information. The BTS3911B supports two O&M modes.
Configuration Management
Configuration management allows operators to configure network resources by using
configuration data in network devices, thereby controlling the running status of network devices.
Configuration management is required on the entire network O&M cycle.
In regional deployment, BTS3911Bs in the same region are deployed in a batch. They
share the common parameter settings, and automatic network planning completes the
specific parameter settings.
Site deployment is applicable to operator-specific private networks, small-scale
BTS3911B deployment scenarios, and the scenarios where regional deployment is not
supported. Operators can use the CME or run MML commands to deploy BTS3911Bs.
l During network adjustment, optimization, or routine O&M, configuration management
allows operators to configure parameters for new features, and modify parameter settings
for scenarios such as network capacity expansion, transmission adjustment, and wireless
network performance optimization. Configuration management also allows operators to
monitor and modify network parameters.
Fault Management
Fault management involves fault detection, fault isolation, self-healing, alarm reporting, and
alarm correlation. The BTS3911B can manage faults in hardware, environment, software,
transmission, cells, and services.
l Users view faults on the device panel and perform simple operations.
l Fault isolation prevents faults from affecting the operational continuity of the BTS3911B.
Self-healing minimizes the impact of faults on services by lowering performance or
reestablishing cells.
l Alarm correlation enables the BTS3911B to report only the root fault and the ultimate
impact on services. Alarm correlation helps engineers quickly pinpoint the root fault,
analyze severity, and take measures to rectify the root fault instead of rectifying the
associated faults.
Performance Management
Performance management involves periodic performance measurement on the BTS3911B and
the collection, storage, and reporting of measurement results
Tracing Management
Tracing management facilitates routine maintenance, commissioning, and troubleshooting by
tracing internal messages as well as messages related to interfaces, signaling links, and UEs.
Security Management
Security management implements user authentication and access control. It includes user
account management, rights management, login management, identity authentication, and
operation authentication.
Security control on the transmission channels between the BTS3911B and the U2000 supports
IPsec, Secure Socket Layer (SSL), Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), and Datagram Transport
Layer Security (DTLS).
Security management provides network- and user-specific security services. It provides the
following functions:
Software Management
Software management involves the following functions:
Inventory Management

6.2 Reliability
This chapter describes the reliability of the BTS3911B, including system reliability, hardware
reliability, and software reliability.
System Reliability
BTS3911Bs significantly improve system reliability. They use the reliability design with
features such as load sharing and configuration redundancy, as well as optimized fault detection
and isolation technologies for boards and systems.
l Redundancy
Units, such as the power supply unit, all support redundancy.
Key files, such as software versions and data configuration files, all support redundancy.
l Reliability
The system automatically detects and diagnoses faults in the software, hardware, and
environment, and reports alarms. Then the system automatically clears the faults using
self-healing measures. If the faults cannot be cleared, the faulty units will be
automatically isolated.
Hardware Reliability
l Overtemperature protection
When the temperature of the power amplifier (PA) in the BTS3911B crosses the threshold
for a major alarm, the BTS3911B automatically switches off the PA and stops providing
services. This protects the BTS3911B from damage caused by high temperatures.
l Reliable power supply
The BTS3911B uses the following techniques to achieve a reliable power supply:
Support for a wide-range of voltages as well as surge protection
Power failure protection for programs and data
l Protection of power supply against overvoltage and overcurrentSurge protection design
The BTS3911B adopts surge protection for the PoE power socket and RGPS clock port.
Software Reliability
l Redundancy
To ensure normal operation of a BTS3911B when errors occur in important files or data,
the BTS3911B provides the following redundancy functions:
Software version redundancy: The BTS3911B stores software versions, including the
BootROM version, in different partitions to provide redundancy. If the active version
is abnormal, the BTS3911B switches to the backup version.
Data configuration file redundancy: The BTS3911B stores data configuration files in
different partitions to provide redundancy. If the current file is damaged, the BTS3911B
can continue working properly by loading the backup file.
l Error tolerance capability
If software errors occur, the self-healing capability prevents the BTS3911Bs from collapse.
The software error tolerance capability covers the following aspects:
Scheduled checks of key resources: The BTS3911B checks software resource usage
and generates related logs and alarms. This allows the BTS3911B to release unavailable
resources.
Task monitoring: When software is running, the BTS3911B monitors the running status
of every task for errors and faults. If an error or fault is detected, an alarm is reported
and self-healing measures are taken to restore the task.
Data check: The BTS3911B performs scheduled or event-triggered data consistency
checks and restores data consistency selectively or preferentially. In addition, the
BTS3911B generates related logs and alarms.
Watchdog: If a software error occurs in a BTS3911B, the BTS3911B detects the error using the
software and hardware watchdogs and automatically restarts.
