The World Wide Web was developed by British physicist and computer scientist Timothy Berners-
Lee as a project within the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva,
Switzerland. Berners-Lee combined several existing ideas into a single system to make it easier for
physicists to use data on the Internet. Most important, he added multimediathe ability to include
graphicsto the hyperlink concept found in a previous Internet service known as gopher. Berners-Lee
had begun working with hypertext in the early 1980s. An early prototype implementation of the Web
became operational at CERN in 1989, and the idea quickly spread to universities in the rest of the
world.
Groups at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign researched and extended Web technology. They developed the first browser that was used
at many sites, named Mosaic, in 1993. To allow the Web to be accessed from a wide variety of
computer systems, researchers built multiple versions of Mosaic. Each version was designed to be used
with a specific operating system, the software that controls the computer. Within a year, computer
programmer Marc Andreessen had formed a commercial company, Netscape Communications

XI. Read the following passage carefully and chose the best answer to questions below it.
When you are being interviewed for a job, remember that its normal for many people to be
nervous, particularly in such a stress-producing situation. There are plenty of jobs indeed, probably
most where a little nervousness isnt looked at askance. It does help to dry a damp brow or a clammy
hand just before meeting the interviewer, but otherwise, dont be too concerned about the outward
manifestations of your nervousness. Experienced interviewers will discount most physical signs of
nervousness. The only one that people have a hard time ignoring is a fidgety hand. Interviewees who
constantly twist their hands or make movements that are dramatically distracting are calling to their
nervousness.
Remember that interviewers talk to people in order to hire, not because they enjoy
embarrassing, uneasy applicants. One way to overcome a flustered feeling, or butterflies in the
stomach, is to note that interviewers want to hire people who have something to offer the company.
If interviewers think you will fit into their organization, you will be the one who is sought after. Its
almost as if you are interviewing them to see if they are good enough for you.
1. According to the passage, the outward sign of nervousness that most attracts the attention of
interviewers is _____________________.
a. a damp brow b. clammy hands
c. restless hand gestures d. jittery stomach
2. An interviewer is someone who _____________________.
a. is looking for a job. b. seeks facts from prospective employees.
c. has already hired you. d. is always on the lookout to trip applicants.
3. It can be inferred from the passage that overcoming nervousness is a matter of_________________.
a. wiping your head and hands before entering the interview room.
b. taking several tranquilizers before the interview.
c. being dramatic and aggressive.
d. realizing that interviews are two-sided and making the most of it.
4. butterflies in the stomach means _____________________.
a. a nervous feeling b. feeling of happiness c. woes d. sufferings
5. discount means _____________________.
a. remember b. ignore c. discontinue d. discharge
