Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

understand the structure and functioning of a digital computer, including its overall
system architecture.

understand the generic principles that underlie the building of a digital computer, digital
logic and memory hierarchy.

analyze the examples of mapping techniques for different cache memory systems

Introduction to digital electronics : digital computers, logic gate, introduction to
combinational circuits, introduction to sequential circuits
Introduction to basics of architecture : computer system as layers of abstraction,
function and structure of a computer, functional components of a computer,
interconnection of components, computer architecture, computer organization,
microcontroller, multi-core
Unit II
Register Transfer and Micro Operations : Bus and Memory Transfer, Logic Micro
Operations, Shift Micro Operations, Fixed Point and Floating point Arithmetic, Design
of arithmetic logic unit., register transfer language, register transfer, arithmetic
microoperations, arithmetic logic shift unit
Unit III
Computer Organization : instruction codes, computer registers, common bus
system, computer instructions, timing and control, instruction cycle, memory
reference instructions, input-output and interrupt
Unit IV
Central Processing Unit : General Register Organization, Stack Organization, Data
Transfer and Manipulation, Program control, Addressing Modes, Reduced instruction
set computer, Complex instruction set computer, major components of central
processing unit, instruction formats
Unit V
Input-Output Organization : Peripheral Devices, Input Output Interface, Data
Transfer Schemes, Direct Memory Access Transfer and Input/Output Processor,
Priority interrupt, modes of data transfer
Memory hierarchy : main memory, auxiliary memory, associative memory, cache
memory, virtual memory
Unit VI
Computer Arithmetic : Addition and Subtraction Algorithm, Multiplication Algorithm,
Division Algorithms
CASE STUDIES : Case study of ARM Processor Architecture, INTEL IA-32

Latest technology and trends in computer architecture : 3D XPoint,


microarchitecture, latest processor for smartphone or tablet and desktop
