Name: Andria Starr - Darleen

Disability of child: Failure to Thrive (organic)

Darleen is a spunky 12 year old today. But as she grew up, she was a completely different child. As a baby she struggled to
drink the required amount of formula, and her mother was unable to lactate. As she grew she seemed to be very unsocial. She would
become fussy on random occasions but even when a parent would sooth her, she wouldnt even make eye contact. Six months later she
started to be able to eat soft foods like potatoes and mechanically soft choices. Even though she was able to eat them, most of the time
she would fuss and refuse, or puke it up after eating it. Her mother just thought she was being a stubborn baby and waited to find help.
When Darleens mother finally decided to see a doctor about her child, she found there was a problem. Darleen was struggling with
Failure to Thrive. The doctor did some tests and found out that Darleen was struggling with GERD. This is a case when a child is
constantly spitting up food because it disagrees with their stomach or they are constantly constipated. With the help of the doctor she
created a new dietary plan. Instead of three large meals a day she would feed Darleen several smaller meals. This helped with
Darleens digestion. Since she was also struggling financially and unable to buy healthy foods she met up with a social worker and
they began working together to create a healthier environment and better food choices for Darleen. With the social workers help her
mother became more experienced when shopping for groceries. After the help of the doctor and social worker she grew into a typically
developing child. She became active and more involved as soon as she was able to enjoy foods without having any reflux issues. Now
that Darleen is twelve she looks and feels a whole lot better. She is now a social butterfly and weights a total of 99lbs and is 59 inches
tall.
