METHODOLOGY OF FIELD S'
INVESTIGATION
BORING / DRILLING (IS 1892 & IS 4464)
Boring in soil / overburden and drilling in rock was conducted using rotary
drilling rigs and hydraulic rigs capable of driling up to 35 m depth below
GL. Casing and bentonite slurry was used to stabilize borehole of 150 mm
dia as per IS 1892 and bore log description of drill hole as per IS 4464. In
rack NX diamond bit was used. The bore logs are shown in Annexure- 2.
STANDARD PENETRATION TEST (SPT) (1S:2131, 1981)
The Standard Penetration Tests were conducted inside exploratory
boreholes at depths shown in bore logs to determine penetration
resistance of soil. The methodology adopted confirmed to IS: 2131 — 1981
(Reaffirmed 1987) .The split spoon sampler resting on the bottom of bore
hole is allowed to sink under its own weight. The driving assembly consists
of a driving head and a 63.5 kg. Weight The split spoon sampler is further
driven by 45 cm. The number of blows required to drive each 15 om
penetration is recorded. The total blows required for the second and third
15 cm penetration is termed as a penetration resistance — N value. The N-
values for each borehole are given in bore logs.
