CPCB DOES NOT RECOMMEND DILUTION TYPE CEMS! WE TOO!

WHY WE DO NOT PREFER DILUTION TYPE STACK GAS ANALYSERS.

We always discouraged using dilution type stack gas analyzers for last 15 years although considering
CAPEX + Owneership cost vs the advantages. it was recommended by some reputed consultants.
CPCB has finally captured the issues and is mentioned in CPCB Guidelines (July 2017). The reasons are
mentioned below.

Very high Initial cost

More time required for calibration

Critical Orifice is a critical component and requires delicate maintenance protocol, specially for dusty
gases.

Vey high consumption of calibration gases.

Individual analyser required for each gases. Dilution ration should be fixed as per actual flue gas
condition.

Readings can be tampered by changing the dilution ratio.

Not approved by EU-TUV/MCERT. Only conforms to US-EPA

Suitaed for only those industries having high concentration of SO2/CO/NO

Remote/Auto calibration not possible.

Daily calibration required which is very big drawback.

Stack Oxygen has to be measured by a separate instrument.

Very few manufacturers.

The only advantage it has is it requires no heating of sample (Less power consumption and can be used
in hazardous area). This is barely an issue for a boiler stack. However, heating is required for out of stack
dilution, which is generally the case.

Please refer to CPCB guidelines (Pg.60) which clearly says Hot Extractive with cooler is the Best
Recommended Technique for all industries whereas dilution technique is only Optionally
Recommended Technology for only some industries.
