The Java Logo This guideline outlines the correct treatment of the Java logo.
Consistent and proper use of the Java logo, the Sun Corporate
logo and the other authorized logos will reinforce Sun’s branding
efforts. In all new productions and printings of your products and
related marketing materials, use this guideline.

The Java logo is for use by Sun and by third-parties for Java-related
Products and Services. The logo is designed specifically for use by
Sun and Sun’s authorized partners.

Sun Microsystems, Inc. has established the following guidelines

for print and digital production of the Java logo. These
guidelines outline rules for correct presentation of the logo in a
variety of applications and media. The Java logo may be used only
in accordance with these directives. All other use is
prohibited by Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Basic Principles
To use the Java logo correctly, it helps to understand the principles behind all
logos. All logos are specific, stylized graphic images that represent a brand or
company.

The Java logo is both a symbol and a piece of artwork. It should be used un-
Visual
modified as delivered by Sun at logos.sun.com.

By adhering to all of the principles that govern its usage, the logo remains a Trademark
powerful and consistent representation of the Sun brand. Wordmark Symbol

the context in which it is found and the logo should always maintain
the proper proportions. The logo should be easily visible, but not x
overwhelming. The smallest size allowed for general use in print is
.5 inches or 13 mm in width. The smallest size allowed for general
use onscreen is 50 pixels in width. The trademark symbol should be
adjusted in relation to the size of the logo. Generally, when the logo
becomes larger, the trademark symbol becomes proportionally small-

er. In digital environments, the “TM” should be manually adjusted to x
maximize legibility at small sizes.

NOTE: If your form factor is too small to support a 50 pixel wide image,
you may be eligible to use a smaller, 30 pixel wide image. Please send The preferred clear space equals
two times the X-height of the “J”
your request with full details about your product to logos@sun.com. in the “Java” wordmark.

Clear Space x
Clear space is the area around the logo that is free of any other graph-
ic elements. Clear space contributes to the quality of the Sun brand
identity by prominently staging the logo. In general, the objective is
to provide enough clear space around the logo to create an effective
visual impression. In situations where space is limited, the minimum x
amount of clear space may be used to maintain the integrity of the
logo. x

Using the Horizontal Java and Java Powered Logos

The horizontal version of the Java and Java Powered Logo provides
a means to allow branding when the vertical space constraints
prohibit use of the preferred Java logo, as shown on previous
pages. All other specifications, with regard to color, clear space,
and correct usage still apply.

Licensees may use the horizontal logo in cases where the vertical
amount of space is less than 100 pixels (1.389 in.). The minimum
size that the Java Powered horizontal logo can be used is 40 pixels Horizontal Java logo
(.556 in.) high. The most likely scenario for this use would be on
the physical exterior of devices, such as Blu-ray disc players or
recorders, set top boxes, or PDAs.

Prior approval for use of the horizontal logo should be obtained

from the Java Brand team by emailing them the intended use and
or a picture of the intended use: javalogo@sun.com.

Typographic Standards for the Use of the SMI Endorsement

An endorsement tagline is generally used with the Java logo. However, in
instances where the logo needs to be reproduced in a size that impacts
legibility, the logo without the “Sun Microsystems” endorsement should
be used. This alternate logo can also be used when the Sun Microsystems
logo is featured in close proximity. For questions about which version to use,
contact logos@sun.com.

Special Usage The Java logo represent all aspects of Sun technology, from the technology’s
capabilities, to the company that developed it, to the intellectual property
that helped create it. Therefore, its use should be very closely guarded.

Nowhere is this more important than on the web. The Java logo can only be
used on websites directly managed by Sun Microsystems and by authorized
licensees in reference to a product that has passed the appropriate compat-
ibility test. The logo should not refer to products and services that are not
licensed, or those from any organization other than Sun Microsystems. The
logo should always be used in such a way that it does not cause confusion
about the sponsorship of the web site on which they’re displayed.

Screen Time
On web pages maintained by Sun, the logo should stay onscreen as long as
the page is visible.

Embroidery
We do not recommend embroidery of the Java logo, especially on a wearable
(e.g., a shirt). We recommend silk-screening the logo. However, if you must
embroider the logo, the final production size should be at least 1.5 inches
in width. When embroidering on a dark cloth, embroider with white thread.
When embroidering on a light color, embroider with a Sun Blue-equivalent
thread. Be sure to proof the logo on material before going to production.

Respecting Sun Trademarks

The Java logo has been registered as a trademark with Sun Microsystems, Inc. This protects Sun and its intellectual property rights.
The trademark symbol “TM” communicates the fact that Sun Microsystems owns its exclusive rights and is built into every logo. It’s
another reason why the Java logo should always be reproduced precisely. When the Java logo is used in documentation, such as a
brochure or advertisement, a written attribution block should be included. The attribution should be in small print, but large enough
to be legible. The attribution usually appears at the end of a document, the bottom of a web page, the inside cover of a publication, at
the bottom or side of a print ad, or on the back of a package. For the Java logo, the attribution should read: The Java logo, and all Sun
based logos are trademarks or registered trademarks of Sun Microsystems, Inc. in the U.S. or other countries.

Other trademark rules

It is critical to correctly represent the registered trademarks both in graphic and text form, as consistent treatment reinforces the value
of the brand for our customers. While these guidelines primarily cover the use of the Java logo, the following rules cover the use of the
trademarks for Sun technology as words in text. If you have any additional questions about the use of these trademarks, you can refer
to the Sun trademarks website at sun.com/policies/trademarks/ or call the Trademark Hotline at (650) 786-6006.

• Trademarks are adjectives, not nouns.

Suggested nouns to use after “Java” include technology, software, or platform.
• Trademarks should not be used as possessives.
• Trademark should not be hyphenated.

Please contact the SMI Legal Department at trademarks@sun.com for more information on trademark usage.
