Re: Summary of General Election Polling Results in North Carolina CD-08

Congressman Larry Kissell is well positioned to win re-election in North Carolina’s 8th District.
Kissell is securing 49% of the vote in a three-way race, and leading Republican nominee Harold
Johnson by 17 points. The individual components of the Kissell brand show voters believe he’s
working to create jobs, in touch with working families, and fundamentally honest. And Johnson’s
unimpressive favorable-to-unfavorable ratio is indicative of a candidate unable to take advantage of
the national climate. Given the funding to communicate with voters in the final weeks of the
campaign, and mount an aggressive field operation, Larry Kissell should continue representing North
Carolina’s 8th District.

Larry Kissell is leading Republican Harold Johnson by 17 points.

• Kissell currently holds a 49% to 32% lead over Johnson, with Libertarian Thomas Hill at 7%.
Even if Johnson were to win every undecided voter (12%), he would still come up short in
this three-way race.

• Kissell leads Johnson among whites, African Americans, self-identified Independents,

registered Independents, and in both the Charlotte and Raleigh media markets.

The diversity and size of North Carolina’s 8th District make it difficult terrain for a
candidate to establish an identity, but Larry Kissell has a strong connection with voters.

• Kissell’s relationship with voters goes beyond just high name-identification and broad
popularity. Kissell has a personal relationship with voters in the 8th District - who know he’s
focused on jobs, in synch with working families, and fundamentally honest and ethical.

Larry Kissell is honest and ethical. 60% Agree / 21% Disagree

Larry Kissell understands the needs of working families. 55% Agree / 34% Disagree
Larry Kissell is focused on creating and protecting jobs for our area. 54% Agree / 32% Disagree

• Harold Johnson’s name-identification (57%) is respectable, but his favorable-to-unfavorable

ratio is only slightly above 1:1 (32% Fav / 25% Unfav). Johnson’s unimpressive popularity
rating demonstrates why he’s unable to take advantage of the otherwise favorable Republican
environment.

Anzalone Liszt Research conducted N=500 live telephone interviews with likely 2010 General Election voters in NC CD-08.
Interviews were conducted between August 19-24, 2010. Respondents were selected at random, with interviews apportioned
geographically based on past voter turnout. Expected margin of sampling error is ±4.4% with a 95% confidence level.
