vi 7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD

Foreword

by Tony Meloto (Founder of Gawad Kalinga)

The Power of Radical Love

I
love writing the Foreword for Mike Grogans books,
this being the second after his inspiring first, The Rise
of the Pinoy. I am moved by his radical optimism for
the Filipino as a foreigner who sees the gold in us when
others can only see superficially the dirt of poverty and
corruption on the surface, quite understandably, from
historical conditioning, brainwashing and self-flagellation.
His Rockstar treatment of the Filipino expresses a deep
affection for a nation unloved by foreign rulers for hundreds
of years and his fanatical admiration for a people with a
low self-image may seem strange to many, including many
Filipinos themselves.

His positive view about the Philippines is a radical

disruption to the traditional doom and gloom scenario that
drove eleven million of our people to seek their Promised
Land abroad, especially in the land of Caucasians who
taught us that God and Superman are white.

Radical Optimism (Real Hope)

Of course that is changing as one of the biggest users of

skin whitener in the world is now starting to believe that

brown is equally beautiful, especially when more blond

and blue-eyed foreigners like Mike say so. And many
enlightened Filipinos themselves are confronted with
the shameful yet delightful discovery, through education,
travel and technology, that the Philippines has no excuse
to remain poor with its massive pool of intelligent and
talented human capital and vast natural resources with one
of the highest biodiversity in the world.

It is no longer wishful
thinking but a mind- It is no longer wishful
blowing reality that the thinking but a mind-
Philippines is now the blowing reality that
land of opportunity in Asia,
the Philippines is
based on simple economic
progress imperatives: crime now the land of
and corruption are down, oppor tunity in Asia
a massive young human
resource base with great potential in communication,
agriculture and technology, vast tracts of available fertile
land and many undeveloped industries beckoning for
partners and investors. Yes, traffic is still bad but with heavy
investment now in priority infrastructure for skyways and
byways and mass transport, and more focus on countryside
development to reverse urban migration, confidently, in
time, it will ease.

It is a constant delight for me to talk to Mike in person,

listen to him speak to his enthralled audiences in public
engagements or simply read what he writes about his
lavish affection for our country he now calls home and our
people he has embraced as family. I suppose he is simply
wise in investing his own future in a poor country like the

mike | grogan

Philippines that is exiting poverty than staying in wealthy

countries in Europe and America that are entering poverty.

Radical Disruption (Positive Change)

Brexit, Duterte and Trump are radical disruptions to the

old economic and political order of elite globalization that
perpetuated sustainable poverty, of unjust and unshared
profit that secured more gain at the top and more pain at
the bottom. Terrorism in Paris, thousands of homeless
camped in the streets of Los Angeles, the refugees of Africa
overwhelming Europe with their hunger and hopelessness.
These are telling times that all is not well with the world
unless we use wealth and power at the top to raise the
bottom up.

Some French interns in Gawad Kalinga(GK) have candidly

remarked that they feel safer in the Philippines than Paris.
Many of them are committed believers and investors in
the GK vision of building a vast network of crime-free and
drug-free communities to end poverty. They also see social
entrepreneurship as the path towards a more enlightened
capitalism in inclusive wealth creation for lasting peace
and sustainable prosperity.

Mike admits that it is our radical optimism to create radical

disruption for positive change that attracted him to the
Philippines in the beginning and made him stay. His early
days at the GK Enchanted Farm gave him a glimpse of the
endearing qualities of the rising Filipino from the bottom of
the pyramid and the energy of the young from our School
for Experiential and Entrepreneurial Development (SEED
Philippines), mostly children of subsistence farmers,
tricycle drivers, construction workers and other manual

laborers. Resiliency, tenacity, solidarity, grit, guts and balls

will bring him out of the slums, will turn our wastelands
into fields of abundance.

Radical Confidence (Faith in Action)

What we are giving the less fortunate and the

underprivileged in our Farm Village University(FVU) in
Angat, Bulacan is the gift of radical confidence, not pity
and charity, as is normally the case. We match compassion
with competence, kindness with excellence, lofty idealism
with enlightened pragmatism in providing them quality
education anchored on shared family, spiritual and human
values to develop self reliance and build self-sufficient
communities. Half of the day they strive for academic
excellence with lessons in cost accounting, environmental
science, business management, English and French, Agri-
business and social entrepreneurship. The other half is
concentrated in developing 53 exciting social enterprises
initiated by them - duck burger, oregano drink, clean ice
cream, gourmet puto, crispy pato, salted quail eggs, healthy
gabi chips, etc - and creating integrated perma culture
farms and securing supply chain.

This radical curriculum is an experiment to disrupt

education and business that perpetuate poverty and hunger
in our country and abroad.

1. It is a rural platform for inclusive wealth creation. The

immediate goal is to mitigate urban migration.

2. It is a bottom up approach towards creating the new

middle-class. Waiting for development to trickle down
is like waiting for Godot.

3. It recognizes that the poor can think beyond micro.

They may have small pockets but they dont have small
brains.

4. It includes the men as part of the poverty solution.

The world of development and micro enterprise often

exclude men because they are difficult, dishonest and
dangerous. But giving up on the men will be a loss of our
male human capital and a mistake that will create more
threats to our safety. To raise men who will not be criminals,
drug pushers, rebels and abusers of women, we have to
build an ecosystem that nurtures them to be hardworking,
honest and honorable - to be providers and protectors of
family and country that they were designed to be.

7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD 1

Introduction

Why every Filipino needs to read this

T
here are so many similarities between my native
country Ireland and the Philippines. Both of our
nations were colonized, both of us are predominantly
Roman Catholic and both of us have a history of mass
emigration.

While watching the epic

movie Heneral Luna, I
could not help myself from
reflecting that there is
another commonality that
we share. A study of Irish
history will reveal that the
greatest enemy of the Irish
is the Irish themselves. And
today a study of any Irish
newspaper will also reveal that the greatest critic of Ireland
is the Irish themselves. We are our own worst enemies. I
believe that this is the same here in the Philippines. In the
words of the great Antonio Luna Brothers, our greatest
enemy is ourselves. The Greatest Enemy of the Filipino
is the Filipino. The greatest critic of the Philippines is the
Filipino themselves. So why are we both so self-critical?

2 7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD

The answer lies in how our human brains are programmed.

Our brains are 2 million years old. Back then our ancestors
primary need was survival. We were constantly looking for
what was wrong, what was missing so that we could quickly
detect any immediate threat to our lives. Our ancestors
brains were wired for survival.
Today however, for the
majority of the people The Greatest Enemy
reading this daily survival of the Filipino
is not our greatest need. It
is the Filipino
is highly unlikely that you
or I will be killed by a wild
animal or an enemy from a rival tribe. Yet our brains are
still wired the same. While our brains are in this default
mode, just like our ancestors, we are constantly focusing
on what is wrong or what is missing. The greatest evidence
of this today is the worlds news media. The vast majority
of todays national and international newspaper headlines
focus on something negative (corruption, murder, terrorism,
natural disasters, celebrity scandal etc. ). I am not saying
that negative news should not be brought to our attention,
but the continuous consumption of negative news will give
us a very unbalanced and unfair view of the world. This is
what I see is happening in the Philippines.
I believe that for every one negative story written about
the Philippines there are 100 positive stories that dont get
talked about. This is the reason why I wrote this book. This
really is the greatest time in history to be in the Philippines.
Whether I am speaking to 7,000 students, 250 young
professionals or 30 business executives I share with the
audience the extraordinarily positive things I see everyday
happening in this country. Living in the Philippines makes

me a better person. Living in the Philippines makes me a

better Catholic. Living in the Philippines makes me a better
man. There is something about the character of the Filipino
that I have not seen in any other country in the world. In
this book, I will share with you the why I believe the Pinoy
is so special and why I see my future in the Philippines.
As you read this book I
want to strongly encourage Living in the

take notes, to underline the

stories that you can relate
to and to highlight information that you were unaware
of. After you have read each chapter I want you to ask
yourself who do I know would benefit from hearing this?.
My expectation is that you will be the one to share what
you learned with them. I want you to think of your fellow
Filipinos as you read this; especially your family, friends
and work colleagues. We need to get this message to all
Filipinos; I need you to play your part.
Remember this book is written for Filipinos but it is written
from the perspective of someone who was not born in the
Philippines but who has become a better person because I
choose to live in your country. You may be very surprised
with some of the things I have written. I wrote this book not
to impress you or just to make you feel good but I wrote this
book to express to you how extraordinary Filipinos really
are and to inspire you to realize your potential as a people.
The greatest days of the Filipino are ahead. Now go ahead
and rediscover the genius of your people, the 7 reasons that
make the Pinoy so unique, the 7 reasons why Filipinos will
change the world.

4 7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD

Reason 1
BAYANIHAN (Pagtinabangay)
Ang mabigat ay gumagaan, kung pinagtutulungan.
(Ang bug-at mugaan, kung tabangan sa tanan. /
Many hands make the work light.)

I
f I ask any Filipino what image comes to their mind
when they think of Bayanihan most would refer to the
classic and traditional image of community members
in the province working together to move a Nipa Hut to a
new location. Bayanihan is where Pinoys come together to
achieve a common noble purpose without the expectation
of compensation or reward. The Bayanihan spirit is
something that is in the DNA of every single Filipino. I want
to start by sharing an everyday example of Bayanihan that
most Filipinos take for granted.

In every country that I have

ever been to (I have traveled
to 39), when I get on a PUV
(Public Utility Vehicle) I
have always paid my fare
directly to the driver or to
the conductor first, then
I take my seat inside the
vehicle. However, in the
Philippines something
astonishing happens when you take a ride on the nations

mike | grogan
AUTHOR | SPEAKER | COACH
7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD 5

most popular form of transport the jeepney. To the

amazement of foreigners, Filipinos take their seat first,
shout out to the driver bayad po and then pass their money
to their seatmate who then passes it to the next passenger,
who then passes it to the next passenger until it gets all the
way to the driver; and it gets even better, if there is change
it will actually come all the way back from the driver to the
person that just paid. This system is just mind-blowing for
foreigners. We do not have this unusual payment system in
our countries. If I were to ask a fellow passenger in my own
country to give my money to the driver either I would be
told directly to feck off (gentle Irish slang for go away) or
worse they would pretend to agree to help but then run away
with my money. Ok, maybe thats a slight exaggeration but
the reality is that in my country we do not have that same
level of community and collaboration that you have in the
Philippines. Filipinos have this natural drive to do things
together. But for the Filipino, it is has become such a normal
daily practice that most dont realize how special it is.

Yet another example of

Bayanihan is the solidarity Bayanihan is where
shown by a community Pinoys come together
to a neighboring family to achieve a common
who has just lost a
noble purpose without
loved one know as the
Damayan System. It is an the expectation of
outpouring of sympathy compensation or
and compassion for the reward
grieving relatives this is

mike | grogan
AUTHOR | SPEAKER | COACH
6 7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD

expressed by neighbors, friends and relative contributing

money to the grieving family to pay for the expenses of the
funeral or volunteering to help the family out during this
difficult time.

In times of celebration and festivity like Fiestas, Weddings

and Baptisms the Bayanihan spirit is also activated as
neighbors help each other out in the preparations so that
the entire community get to share the joy of the occasion.

Perhaps the most beautiful example of Bayanihan is

what happens after the country is hit by a typhoon. The
Philippines is the most storm-exposed nation on earth.
On average, eight or nine tropical storms make landfall
in the Philippines each year, with another 10 entering the
Philippine Area of Responsibility. The Filipino experiences
more natural disasters in one year than my own countrymen
do in a lifetime. The devastation of these storms can be so
immense. However, these beautiful people will never be
defeated. After every typhoon, without any expectations,
you will witness Filipinos come together to help those in
the most affected areas. This is Bayanihan. Brother helping
brother. Barangay helping barangay. City helping city.
Province helping province. The Filipino Spirit is stronger
than any typhoon.

Reason 2
MADISKARTE (Madiskar te)
Habang maikli ang kumot, matutong mamaluktot.
(Kung mubo ang habol, pagtuun ug inot. / When the
blanket is too short, learn how to make do.)

T
he first sight of a Filipino Jeepney is something
that shocks every first-time visitor to the country.
The Philippines is the only country in the world to
use this unique form of transport. Jeepneys are perhaps
one of the most beautiful examples of the Filipino value
of Diskarte - to adapt and be creative when the moment
calls for it. In addition to the artistic and diverse designs
that have been created on its exterior, the jeepney was
originally made from leftover U.S. military jeeps from World
War II. Thanks to the Diskarte genius of Filipino engineers,
the jeepney rapidly emerged as a popular and creative way
to re-establish inexpensive public transportation, much
of which had been destroyed during World War II. Today it
remains the iconic symbol
of Filipino creativity.

for karetons, steel pails made into barbecue grills, old nokia
phones used as family radios. Converting something old
into something practical and useful (even if it significantly
varies from its original design) is something that Filipinos
excel at. Diskarte is a reflection of the will & determination
that lives within all Filipinos to make the best of their given
situation. For the past 30 years, overseas Filipinos have been
adapting to some of the most environmentally challenging
lands and diverse people cultures of the world. Filipino
immigrants have embraced so many new languages and
customs in their host countries that it is no wonder that the
vast majority of employers all around the world credit their
Filipino employees as the most caring, compassionate and
dedicated workers they have ever had. This is one of the
reasons why so many foreign companies invest operations
in the Philippines.

Diskarte is about going

out of your comfort zone Diskar te is a
and taking a risk. The reflection of the
most inspiring examples
will & determination
for me today are the new
generation of Filipino that lives within all
entrepreneurs, that are Filipinos to make the
determined to achieve best of their given
financial freedom for their situation
family and at the same time
adding extraordinary value
to their fellow Filipinos. These are the Filipinos that refuse
to accept the status quo but instead look within their own
country and see the abundance of business opportunities
to become unique, to create art, to be remarkable. From
agriculture, manufacturing to social tourism, I really believe

mike | grogan
AUTHOR | SPEAKER | COACH

that because of these passionate Filipino entrepreneurs

one-day Made in the Philippines will come to signify
the same level of quality, romance and respect as Made
in France. The Gawad Kalinga (GK) Enchanted Farm in
Angat, Bulacan (a 90-minute drive from Manila) is perhaps
the greatest evidence of what extraordinary possibilities lie
ahead. It is the first Farm Village University in the world
and acts as both a hub and ecosystem for social business
start-ups. Its goal is to replicate this in 24 other provinces
and to raise 500,000 social entrepreneurs in 10 years. These
brave entrepreneurs represent the new generation of
wealth creators that will create jobs for millions of other
Filipinos. Through the spirit of diskarte, we will see a day
where no Filipino will feel they have to leave their country
because of economic pressures at home.

MASAYAHIN (Malipayon)
Ang kaginhawaan ay nasa kasiyahan,
at wala sa kasaganahan.
(Ang kahayahay anaa sa kalipay ug wala sa kantidad nga
maihap. / Well-being is in happiness and not in prosperity.)

T
he hashtag Its more fun in the Philippines -
is true. They applaud loudly and hug you a lot.
These are the words of International Best-Selling
Author Neil Gaiman after he spent time here. Like Gaimans
observation, I think it is impossible for a Filipino to go a day
without smiling and laughing. I would dare to add that the
Philippines have the highest number of smiles per square
kilometer in the world. I could challenge any foreigner
to walk down any street in the Philippines and count
the number of smiles he sees on the faces of the people
they meet. That foreigner would come to the conclusion
that Filipinos are either stone-cold crazy or they are one
the most joyful groups of
people in the world. I
believe that foreigner will
choose the latter. Filipinos
call this special state of joy
- Kasiyahan

Filipinos seem to have this

magical power of finding

a joke in almost every situation. They are always joking

with me. Especially when I do talks in schools around the
country. I have been compared with the singer Ed Sheeran,
the actor Owen Wilson and even to the Alaska Kid (the
brand ambassador for a condensed Milk company). Dont
get me started on the number of times Filipina Moms have
teased me once they found out that I am not married yet.
Filipinos will make fun of anything and anyone. Perhaps
one of the reasons why Filipinos are the worlds number
one users of Facebook because of their constant desire to
give and receive joy. Every celebrity, every politician and
every Juan can be the subject of that witty Filipino sense
of humor.

For the first time visitor, it

may appear that Filipinos This perseverance
are very shy and reserved and determination
when you first meet them to have fun, to be
but put a Filipino in front of
happy no matter
a karaoke machine and you
see a completely different what, exemplifies
side of them. In the western the tenacity and
world there is an unwritten resilience of the
rule if you cant sing, dont Filipino
sing. Even if you consider
yourself a good singer, the
fear of judgment and criticism from family, friends and
peers make most westerners (including me) afraid to stand
up in front of others and sing their favorite song. But here
in the Philippines that culture of judgment does not exist.
There are no such limits. Everyone can sing everyone is
encouraged to sing and unlike every other country in the
world everyone does sing. Only in the Philippines.

12 7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD

Filipinos love to party, they love to celebrate, they love

festivals and above all they love Christmas. The love of the
Christmas period could be considered borderline crazy for
many foreigners. When my Filipino friends were wishing
me a happy Christmas on September 1st I too was very
confused. It is normal to see groups of Filipinos practicing
for weeks in advance so they have their dance routine
mastered for their Christmas party. The Philippines boasts
the longest Christmas celebration in the world, a whopping
5 months from the beginning of September to the end of
January. Crazy? Yes. Fun? Absolutely.

When super typhoons hit the nation, dont be surprised

that within a matter of hours after the storm, to discover
sidewalk vendors with their makeshift stands smiling and
singing Beyoncs Im a Survivor. This perseverance and
determination to have fun, to be happy no matter what,
exemplifies the tenacity and resilience of the Filipino. It
is the Hindi natitinag ang pusong Pilipino (Resilience of
the Filipino Heart). The idea that something good could
be found in the most challenging of circumstances is a
hallmark characteristic of the Pinoy. This is the spirit of
Masayahin, a spirit of joy not only for self but a burning
desire within all Filipinos that those around them also feel
this joy.

General Douglas MacArthur who was so astonished
by the resilience and strength of the Filipino guerrilla forces
against the Japanese during WWII. In the Korean war, one of
the most famous battles and turning points of the war was
the Battle of Yuldong. It was during that battle, that a mere
900 Filipino soldiers sensationally held their ground against
40,000 enemy soldiers. From Lapu-Lapu to Jose Rizal the
history books are full of examples of Filipinos demonstrating
extraordinary courage and bravery (Katapangan) in the
most difficult of circumstances. However the battlefield
and in times of war are not the only place where Filipino
Katapangan is activated.

will meet a Filipino, their bravery to endure lifes greatest

I am blessed that I got to discover a new type of Filipino
hero. These are the new generation of Filipinos that are
rejecting the lies of the past, that they are not good enough
or not smart enough. They are the Filipinos rejecting the
status quo and the false belief that the Philippines will

choose to believe in the greatness within themselves and

the greatness that lies within every Filipino. These are the
Filipinos that use their Katapangan to convert their beliefs
into action. These are the Filipinos committing themselves
to nation building to create a First World Philippines in our

In business they are Filipinos that are creating World-

consumer: My favorite personal care products are Filipino
(Human Nature), my favorite chocolate is Filipino (Malagos),
my favorite iced tea is Filipino (Bayani Brew), my favorite
coffee store is Filipino (Bos Coffee). These proudly Pinoy
brands are truly World-Class and in my opinion better than
any of their foreign competitors. Together, they smash the
false belief that foreign products are better than Filipino
products. For me, these brave Filipino entrepreneurs are
some of the most inspiring examples of Filipino Excellence

there I would meet a
Filipino. What greatly
impressed me about the
Filipinos I met in these
foreign countries is how
important it is to them to
connect with their fellow
Filipinos. Unlike many
other expat communities
around the globe, these
overseas Filipinos have a
real sense of comradeship, fellowship and brotherhood that
is uniquely Filipino. From how they celebrate, to how they
commemorate, to how they encourage each is something
that greatly impressed me. Whether it is in the worlds
busiest airports or in the most remote cities around the
globe, once a Filipino sees another fellow Filipino in the
distance, even if they have never met each other before,
they will always smile at each other. Even if they do not

7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD 17

get the opportunity to speak, the smile is enough to send

a powerful and affirming message to each other in that
moment.

The most dramatic evidence

of this fellowship is every Unlike many other
Sunday in Hong Kongs expat communities
Statue Square. There you
around the globe,
will meet thousands of
Filipinas (mostly employed these overseas
as domestic helpers) coming Filipinos have
together to enjoy their one a real sense of
and only day off a week. They comradeship,
spread newspapers on the fellowship and
cement floor to sit on, and
brotherhood that is
then spend the afternoon
eating, visiting, playing cards, uniquely Filipino
styling one anothers hair and
trading romance novels. I later discovered this beautiful act
of solidarity is what Filipinos call Kapatiran.

The practice of Kapatiran is everywhere in the Philippines.

The vast majority of Fishermen in the Philippines fish not
as individuals but as a team. Whatever they catch they
share equally amongst themselves. When it comes to saving
and lending money Filipinos have a unique tradition called
Paluwagan - wherein you save together with a group and
reap what you saved on a specific date and time. The idea
revolves around a group of people paying the same amount
of money on either a daily/weekly/monthly basis wherein
each member is being paid (mostly the total amount of
money collected on the given pay in) on the desired date
and time by the group.

mike | grogan
AUTHOR | SPEAKER | COACH

Filipino teams achieve amazing results when the spirit of

Kapatiran is embraced. A group of college students will
help each other on their thesis project until the late hours
of the night to ensure they meet their deadline. In organized
groups like Tau Gamma Phi (Triskelions), Brotherhood of
Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP), Junior
Chamber International (JCI) and Rotary International,
Filipino come together to create outreach programs that
make a life changing impact on the communities they
serve.

History teaches us, that perhaps the greatest example

of Filipino Kapatiran is from the days of the Philippine
Revolution the Katipunan - led by the heroic Andres
Bonifacio. The Katipunan was a movement of Pinoys and
Pinays, which sought the independence of the Philippines
from Spanish colonial rule. Bonifacio called on his fellow
Filipinos to be united in will, united in thought, and united
in purpose and that we might have strength to combat
the prevailing evil in our Nation. So much great things
can be achieved when Filipinos are united by the spirit of
Kapatiran.

Reason 6
MAPAGBIGAY (Manggihatagon)
Ang matapat na kaibigan, tunay na maaasahan.
(Ang tinuud nga amigo, andam mutabang kanimo. / You
will know a true friend in time of need.)

W
orld-renowned chef and TV host, Anthony Bourdain
described Filipinos as the most giving people on
the planet. Hollywood actor, Vin Diesel described
the Philippines as the best place Ive ever been to in my life,
I can feel love from you. And during his historic papal visit
in 2015, Pope Francis remarked that Filipinos everywhere
are known for their love of God, their fervent piety and their
warm devotion to our lady and her rosary. These are just
some of the millions of foreigners that have experienced
first hand the extraordinary levels of love and generosity
from Filipinos when compared to the vast majority of other
cultures around the world. My good friend and Best-Selling
Author Tom Graham, during his inspirational talks shares
the story of how a Gawad Kalinga community in Bantayan
Island (northern Cebu) hosted him as he traveled across
the Philippines during the Christmas of 2013. Tom explains
that his visit happened just weeks after super typhoon
Yolanda hit (Typhoon Haiyan: the strongest recorded storm
in history). The community however despite recovering
from the devastation of the storm welcomed Tom with
open arms. They came together to have a party for their
unexpected visitor singing songs and sharing stories.

Later that night Tom realized the extent of the Mapagbigay

attitude that was given to him when he noticed he was the
only person in the community who had a roof over his head
as he slept. And even more amazingly the family that had
given him a place to sleep were themselves sleeping on the
ground. Not only did they give him the best available shelter
they also gave Tom their only bed. This extraordinary
generosity had a life changing impact on Tom, who later
went on to write the best-selling book The Genius of the
Poor: An Englishmans Life-Changing Journey in the
Philippines. What most Filipinos would consider as just
normal hospitality is something that would just not happen
in our own countries.

And this is not something

that only foreigners What most Filipinos
experience, Filipinos would consider as just
commonly invite total
strangers passing by their
normal hospitality is
gates into their homes something that would
for a fiesta or wedding just not happen in our
celebration. Everyone is own countries
welcome to join in the
celebration. As a foreigner
this practice is so unusual as in my own country we have a
strict invitation only mindset if you are not on the list
you are not getting in it would be unheard of at a family
celebration to just start randomly inviting strangers to join
in on the festivities but for the Filipino it just feels like
second nature. If there is a buffet involved at these parties
(and there almost always is), Filipinos never want to take
the last piece of food from the serving plate. A bizarre
stand off will take place, where only at the end of the

party, sometimes during the clean up time, when someone

will finally ask who wants this last piece?. Only in the
Philippines!

Perhaps the most

beautiful example of the
Mapagbigay attitude
is the phenomena of
pasalubong (welcome
gifts). The first time one
of my team members
gave me pasalubong after
she returned from a trip
to the province I was
just at a loss for words, I could not believe that she would
get a gift for me. I never even heard of the concept before,
but for Filipinos, it is so natural to express the Mapagbigay
attitude, that even on vacation when they are supposed
to be relaxing and having fun they are still thinking of
what pasalubong to bring back to their family, friends and
work colleagues. Many of my Filipino friends have told me
that the anticipation of getting pasalubong from a parent
coming home after being away for a period of time is
often a cherished childhood memory for them. The spirit
of pasalubong has given birth to what Filipinos call the
Balikbayan Box. This is where an overseas Filipino, who
is unable to frequently return to visit their family, sends
back a box full of gifts. Especially during the Christmas
period, the opening of the box when it arrives in the family
home creates precious moments of unforgettable joy as
loved ones feel connected to each other by the power of the
Mapagbigay mindset even though they maybe thousands
of miles away from home.

Reason 7
WALANG IWANAN ( Walay Biyaay)
Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan, di
makakarating sa paroroonan.
(Ang di muila sa gigikanan, di kaabot sa padulngan. /
One who forgets where he came from, will never get to his

T
he Filipino Value that has possibly had the greatest
impact on me is Walang Iwanan (leave no one
behind). I first got introduced to Walang Iwanan
when I learned about the work of Gawad Kalinga. GK is
doing some of the most remarkable work I have ever seen
in restoring human dignity and helping people break free
from poverty. After I spent 2 years in Africa, I was frustrated
when I observed so many humanitarian organizations with
so many good intentions, making only a minimal difference
to the people they were trying to help. GK is different its
unique model in partnering with the poor, involving them in
building shared prosperity, was so refreshing and inspiring
the likes of which I have never seen before. I would go as
far to say that GK is one of the most effective humanitarian
organizations in the world. One of the mantras of the GK
staff and volunteers is less for self, more for others, enough
for all - how the world desperately needs this. These
world-class Filipinos are the most compassionate people I
have ever met. Filipino organizations like GK, driven by the
spirit of Walang Iwanan have so much to teach the rest of
the world.

mike | grogan

Walang Iwanan is not just

something associated with
charity or humanitarian
work. When I deliver
my talks, seminars and
trainings across the
Philippines I sometimes
ask the audience if they
have ever gone to the airport
to say goodbye to someone?, almost everyone says yes.
This always shocks me. As an OIW (Overseas Irish Worker)
since 2006, when I say goodbye to my family I typically say
goodbye to them in the family home then I travel by bus
for 3 hours on my own to the airport where I get on my
plane and fly. But here in the Philippines sometimes the
entire barangay goes to the airport !!! You have jeepney loads
of family members and friends come to the airport to say
their final goodbyes. Only in the Philippines. I go on to tell
the audience that in my country (and every other country
that I know of) I have just one God Mother and one God
Father. But here in the Philippines, it is normal for Filipinos
to have several godparents. Why so many? Walang Iwanan!
The parents dont want to leave anyone off that list. Only in
the Philippines.

Perhaps the most beautiful

...less for self, example of Walang Iwanan
more for others, is how Filipinos express
their respect to their elders.
enough for all...
The beautiful Mano gesture,
unique to the Philippines,
is performed as a sign of respect to elders and as a way of
accepting a blessing from them. The words po and opo

mike | grogan
AUTHOR | SPEAKER | COACH
24 7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD

are frequently used at the end of each sentence as a sign of

respect when addressing someone older.

Filipinos are extremely loyal to their family. The greatest

evidence of this is how Filipinos care for their elders in the
final years of their lives. I am so touched by the honor and
loyalty of so many Filipinos who believe that when their
elders are unable to live alone, the time has come for them
to pay their respects and to be able to serve their parents
just as they were cared for when they were younger. This is
Walang Iwanan. It is the compassion within all Filipinos to
remember where they came from and to never forget who
helped them become the person they are today.

A
fter reading this book I want to ask your help in
sharing with others what you have learned. The
one thing I want you to do is to identify one person
you know who is very proud to be a Filipino. Find out
why they are proud to be a Filipino. Ask them Bakit mo
ipinagmamalaki ang pagiging isang Filipino? / Nganong
ikapasigarbo mo nga ikaw Pilipino? / Why are you proud
to be a Filipino?. As you listen to their answers make the
connection between their answers and the 7 Filipino values
that you read about in this book.

This will be your opportunity to help them see things about

the Filipino that they may never have thought of before.
Share with them why so many foreigners have so many
positive things to say about their people. Share with them
your key takeaways from this book. Whether you are at the
dinner table with your family, in the office pantry with your
work colleagues or connecting with your friends on social
media, this is your chance to make them even more proud
to be a Filipino.

Although you may think this is just a small thing I am

asking you to do, never underestimate the power of words.
Words have the power to heal, to inspire and to empower.
You could start a conversation that could forever change
their thinking about being a Filipino. You could start a
conversation that could possibly change their life.

The 7 Reasons why Filipinos

will change the world

Reason #1: BAYANIHAN (Pagtinabangay)

Ang mabigat ay gumagaan, kung pinagtutulungan. (Ang

bug-at mugaan, kung tabangan sa tanan. / Many hands
make the work light.)

Reason #2: MADISKARTE (Madiskar te)

Habang maikli ang kumot, matutong mamaluktot. (Kung

mubo ang habol, pagtuun ug inot. / When the blanket is too
short, learn how to make do.)

Reason #3: MASAYAHIN (Malipayon)

Ang kaginhawaan ay nasa kasiyahan, at wala sa

kasaganahan. (Ang kahayahay anaa sa kalipay ug wala sa
kantidad nga maihap. / Well-being is in happiness and not
in prosperity.)

Reason #4: MATAPANG (Maisog)

Ang bayaning nasusugatan, nag-iibayo ang tapang. (Ang

sundalong gakasamaran, mas muisog ug taman. / The
wounded patriot becomes even more courageous.)

Conclusion

Why the Filipino will change the world

P
erhaps after reading this you are a bit confused.
Perhaps you are asking yourself Why does it take
a foreigner to write this book? or Why does it take
an outsider to tell us this?. When my team and I travel
across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao to deliver our talks,
seminars and trainings the majority of the audiences are
still surprised that a foreigner has so much belief in their
country, where so many Filipinos dont. I explain that this
self-doubt is normal. The story of the Filipino is like the
story of the butterfly, it cannot see how beautiful its wings
are. Sometimes it takes an outsider to remind them of that
beauty.

My purpose in writing this

book is not to preach to you
but to remind you of the
extraordinary greatness
that is within you and
within all Filipinos. With
all my heart I believe that
this is the greatest time
in history to be in the

mike | grogan
AUTHOR | SPEAKER | COACH
7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD 29

Philippines, this is the greatest time in history to be a

Filipino. I am convinced, that the more people we inspire
to see this new perspective, then the more people will start
to believe in the Filipino dream, then the more people will
start to take action for the greater good.
I believe the greatest
victory of the Filipino The story of the
still lies in the horizon - A Filipino is like
First-World Philippines in the story of the
our lifetime. A First-World
butterfly, it cannot
Philippines built on the
spirit of Bayanihan. A First- see how beautiful
World Philippines created its wings are
by the genius of Diskarte. A
First-World Philippines that inspires the Katapangan in its
people. A First-World Philippines that lives in Kasiyahan. A
First-World Philippines connected together by the power of
Kapatiran. A First-World Philippines that practices Bigayan
daily. A First-World Philippines where no one is left behind
(Walang Iwanan).
That is why I believe the Filipino will change the world. You
have these 7 beautiful values that we foreigners do not have
in our countries. Our world is broken and Filipinos have
so much to teach the world. You can create a nation here
in the Philippines the likes of which the world has never
seen before. You can show the rest of humanity of what is
possible. You can inspire the entire planet. Thats why I am
not leaving the Philippines. Because everyday in the face of
every Filipino I see this extraordinary potential.
I wrote this book to help you make the decision to join the
growing number of Filipinos who are choosing to believe

mike | grogan
AUTHOR | SPEAKER | COACH
30 7 REASONS WHY FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD

in the greatness of their nation and the greatness that lies

within them. As I end this book I feel an enormous sense
of gratitude in my heart. I am a better man because of the
Filipino. It is my honor to play my part in serving your
people. Yet it breaks my heart to see so many Filipinos who
do not believe in themselves, who do not believe in their
country, who do not believe in their fellow Filipino. So let
me end this book, by sharing with you, my favorite quote, a
promise that was written in a book thousands of years ago
that I believe is written for the Filipino people today.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD,
plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you
hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

God believes in the Filipino. God smiled when he created

the Filipino. God has great plans for the Filipino. The only
thing God asks you in return is to believe. This is your time.
God is waiting. The world is waiting. The Rise of Pinoy has
begun. Now what are you going to do?

Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

Mabuhay ang Pilipino!

Mabuhay ka!
