CHENANI-NASHRI TUNNEL
ABOUT:
Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, also known as Pinetop Tunnel, is a road tunnel in the Indian state
of Jammu and Kashmir on NH 44(former name NH 1A before renumbering of all national
highways). The work was started in 2011 and was inaugurated on 2 April 2017 by Prime minister
Mr Narendra Modi.
It is India's longest road tunnel with a length of 9.28 km (5.8 mi). It is the first tunnel in the country
with a fully integrated tunnel control system. The tunnel reduces the distance
between Jammu and Srinagar by 30 km and cut travel time by two hours. The all-weather tunnel
bypasses snowfall and avalanche prone areas in winter at places like Patnitop, Kud,
and Batote that obstruct NH 44every winter and cause long queues of vehicles - sometimes for
days at length.

INITIATION:
The foundation was laid for the project in July 2011 by the then Jammu and Kashmir Chief
Minister Omar Abdullah with Union Health Minister GHULAM NABI AZAD, under the
ruling UPA government. The original estimate to build this two-lane tunnel was2,520
CR (US$390 million), but escalated to a total of 3,720 CR (US$580 million).
The scheduled date of completion for the project was May 2016.
However, the critics and the opposition Congress leaders were quick to point out that he
had only inaugurated a project that was launched during the UPA regime.
A few opposition leaders even asked when MODI would inaugurate something that has
been completed by the NDA government. Apart from the apparent politics, the criticism,
however, was a bit unfair as MODI government has also launched several ambitious
signature projects that would change the face of the country

Consequences:
1. On 12 October 2016, it was reported that almost all the work had been completed and the
remaining work was planned to be finished in a few days and that "98 percent civil work
including construction of 9 km tunnel and its approach road has been completed while the
installation of equipment and gadgets like sound diffusers, ventilators, fans, firefighter
equipment, electrical panels, transformers, lighting etc. inside the tunnel is under progress
and likely to be completed in next 20-30 days." They added that after the completion of
remaining work, it has to pass the quality and commuters safety tests, and that the entire
process would be completed by last week of November and authorities will either
inaugurate the "ambitious" project in last week or November of first week of December,
depending upon the availability of representatives from Union Government.
2. However the project had not been completed by January 2017 and there was an uproar in
the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, where the opposition legislators demanded to know
why the tunnel was not opened stating that both Jammu-Srinagar and Jammu-Kishtwar
National Highways are closed at various places due to land sliding and added that several
passengers were trapped on both the Highways at various places.
3. On 3 February 2017, official sources said that the project was getting delayed due to bad
weather conditions and snowfall on the highway, which snapped the electricity supply to the
area and so the executing agency was unable to continue with the required testing and
inspection processes
4. According to a news article on 1 March 2017, the Independent Engineers (IEs) reported
that the demonetization on 8 November 2016 resulted in work getting affected drastically as
the contractors failed to pay the labour involved in the work.
5. Their report said that the contractors were unable to collect the tools and tackles of small
amount due to the restrictions of amount withdrawal from the Bank accounts, and the
subcontractors were not able to pay to daily labour wage which was around Rs.200,
besides being unable to purchase the essential material from local market due to non-
availability of cash. The Construction Company's Executive, Shafaq Syed also confirmed,
Demonetization crippled our working. We were unable to make payments to our
subcontractors. Paying wages had become impossible

TECHNOLOGY USED:
1. The Chenani-Nashri road tunnel is the countrys first and globally the sixth road tunnel
which uses a transverse ventilation system. It has been enabled by ABB drives and
controlled by ABB software. Such ventilation systems, for such long tunnels, are crucial to
maintain clean air, permissible carbon dioxide levels and expel harmful vehicle emissions.
The ventilation system in the Chenani-Nashri tunnel, the longest highway tunnel in Asia, will
ensure that passengers have access to fresh air as they drive through it.
2. The tunnel has two tubes running parallel. While the main traffic tunnel is 13 metres in
diameter, a separate safety or escape tunnel of diameter 6 metres alongside. These two
tubes, each around 9 km in length, are connected by 29 cross passages at regular intervals
along the entire length of the tunnel. These passages add up to about 1 km of tunnel
length, and the main and escape tubes, plus the cross passages make up about 19 km of
tunnel length, IE reported.
3. Low harmonics variable speed drive (VSD) system for tunnel ventilation has been
designed, engineered and supplied, in a bid to make sure the travel of commuters will be
safe. The VSDs and motors are installed at the North (Nashri) and South (Chenani) portals
for air supply and exhaust. The VSDs are also equipped with inbuilt redundancy to ensure
minimum downtime.

4. People will be able to use their phones while travelling inside the tunnel. According to an IE
report, network providers have reportedly set up facilities inside the tunnel to carry signals.
Also, lighting inside the tunnel has been adjusted at a gradient luminous capacity in order to
prevent diminution of vision because of the sudden change in light that happens while
inside and outside the tunnel.
5. New Austrian Tunnelling method (NATM) also known as Sequential Excavation Method
(SEM). It is a technique used in many famous tunnels
FACTS & BENEFITS:
It will also be operational during winters, offering connectivity throughout the year which
has been a challenge so far.
Airtel, Idea, BSNL (including other operators) and Radio frequency will be available
inside.
The vehicle having a height up to 5meters are allowed and special sensors are applied
to check that.
13 meter is the diameter of dual tunnels while a 6-meter escape tunnel is also there.
27 Lakh INR worth of fuel will be saved every day and will reduce 2 and half hour of total
travel time.
Proper surveillance is set up inside and operated using 124 CCTV cameras installed
inside which will also help during SOS conditions.
50KMPH is the maximum speed limit set, and yes, it has toll charges too.
Hypersensitive ventilation systems are also installed inside to have a proper ventilation
facility throughout the dual tunnel road.

Chenani-Nashri Tunnel Toll Tax Rates

Toll gates are constructed at both ends of the tunnel, which will be charging as per following rates.

The toll for LMV Vehicle is 55INR for one side and 85INR for two side journey.
The toll for Mini Bus is 90INR for one side and 135INR for two side journey.
The same for Bus and Trucks is set to 190INR for one side and 285INR for two side
journey.

While LMV vehicles can also pay 1,870INR which will cover Chenani-Nashri Tunnel toll tax for
one complete month.
