Worksheet: Your Territory Map

Mid-Island Ahousaht Nation of the Nuu-chah-nulth people:


means people of Ahous, a small bay on the west side of Vargas
Island in Clayoquot Sound. Ahousaht can be translated to mean
people living with their backs to the land and mountains on a
beach along the open sea. Ahousaht First Nation territory
encompasses much of Clayoquot Sound with the village of
Maaqtusiis being the only reserve or village site inhabited year-
round.

Food gathering: Your job is to gather gooseberries and salal


For thousands of years, over 30 types of berries have been harvested in
our traditional territories from early summer to late fall. Berries are an
important part of traditional knowledge. We were shown when the berries
were ripe by listening and observing the changes in the animals and plants.
