A Peek at this Week
Math: This week we are working with Division in Topic 5. Students are required to divide up to
a 4 digit number by a 1-digit number. In third grade, students learned how to use a
model/picture to divide. This year we will practice using the traditional algorithm (long
division) to divide. Once the students are able to divide successfully using the algorithm, I will
teach other strategies that can be used for division also: area model and partial
quotients. Students will also have to interpret remainders when dividing in word problems.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.6
Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit
divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the
relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by
using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Reading: This week, we are applying what we have been learning in class about reading
complex nonfiction text. Students will read two texts about extreme weather. They will then
summarize one of the texts, relate a part of the text to the main idea, analyze the authors
craft in a specific part, and use information from both texts to focus on a subtopic. This is
the format their Post Assessment will be next week. Nov. 14- Vocabulary Test- Students can
use https://quizlet.com/_3yc4ce to study terms as well as some other study habits that are
recommended on Google Classroom, and below. The test will be APPLICATION of meaning
through reading comprehension.

Writing: Our writing celebration is on Friday!

Social Studies: This week, students will be studying Week 7 of Studies Weekly. Students will
learn about differences and similarities among four tribes of the Algonquian nation. Students
will learn the unique traditions and characteristics of the Catawba, Tuscarora, Chowanoc,
and Waxhaw tribes. They will also learn how each of these tribes interacted with the early
European settlers. Next week. students will develop an understanding of Thanksgiving
through historical events from different perspectives while practicing reading comprehension,
creative writing, sequencing, and analytical and research skills.

Science: This week in science, students will continue their study of fossils. They will be fossil
hunters and demonstrate knowledge by determining the different types of fossils in
class. Next week, students will complete a STEM activity on the Mayflower ship. They will
design ships from materials that are supplied for them in class. The ship will have to float,
but must carry as much load as possible without sinking. Students will work in groups to
create these ships and see which group can create the ship that can carry the most load.
