Social Studies/Colonial Life: Money, Barter and Credit; 4th grade; 1:00 pm; November 10, 2017

SOL: (written out or cut/paste)

STANDARD VS.4d
The student will demonstrate knowledge of life in the Virginia colony by
d) describing how money, barter, and credit were used.

Content outline:
Students will determine cause-and-effect relationships, draw conclusions and make
generalizations, and make connections between past and present.

Rationale:
It is important for students to know how money, barter, and credit was used in the old times, so
they will be able to compare it to the present times, since they will be using forms of exchange in
their everyday life when purchasing products.

Objective(s) of the lesson:

Students will be able to understand the economic system of the Virginia Colony and explain the
forms of exchange used during colonial time with 95% accuracy.

Lesson Opening:
Have you ever saved your money in order to buy something that you really want? Have you ever
traded things with anyone? Have you ever been to the bank? What are some things that you buy
with your money?
Connection:
Students will need to have prior knowledge about
What money is used for.
How paper money and coins look like.
That money is kept in a bank.
Goods can be traded for other products.

Instructional Strategies/Processes:
Video Introduction (5 mins)
Students will watch a video on forms of exchange

Teacher Modeling (15 mins)

Give out the students sheets of paper that have five squares on them with the five main
vocabulary terms: credit, debt, barter, money, and savings.
Tell the class the definitions of the terms money, barter, credit, debt, and savings.
Explain the students that money was not often used in the early Virginia Colony. Few
people had paper money and coins to use to buy goods and services. Barter was
commonly used instead of money. Tobacco was used as money to pay for goods and
services.
Explain the students that because farmers couldn't pay for goods until their crops were
harvested, credit was important in Virginia. Farmers and other consumers could also buy
goods and services on credit and pay their debts when their crops were harvested and
sold.
Tell students that Colonial Virginia had no banks.

Interactive Activity (15 mins)

Create a skit about bartering. In your skit, you will show bartering goods for goods.
Create a skit about credit. In your skit, show someone purchasing goods on credit,
promising to pay for them later.
Create a skit about debt. In your skit, show someone who has gone into debt because
they purchased something on credit.
Create a skit about savings. In your skit, demonstrate how you would have saved in order
to buy something you need.
Create a skit about money. In your skit, show what money is. Make sure to mention that
few people in colonial Virginia had money, so there were no banks.
Products:
Notes in notebook
Skits

Assessment:
Informal Assessment: As the students act out the scenes, I will be able to see whether they were
able to show and explain properly each of the terms learned in the lesson.
