Gyan Darshan, a 247 dedicated education TV channel. DD-Gyan

Darshan, the educational TV channel of India is a joint venture of Doordarshan and IGNOU. Indira

Gandhi National Open University, IGNOU transmits programs from its Electronic Media Production

Centre at New Delhi. The curriculum based programs include programs for primary schools, secondary

schools, open school, teachers enrichment education, open and distance 115 learning, vocational

courses, courses for disadvantaged sections of the society. Besides this, programs telecast include career

guidance, computer education, preparation for competitive exams, edutainment, arts, culture, tourism

and other developmental themes. The University Grants commission, the Consortium for Educational

communication, the National council for Educational Research and Training, Department of Environment

and Forests, Ministry of Rural Development, Department of Electronics, Ministry of Health, National Aids

Control Organization, UNICEF, Department of Science and Technology, National Entrepreneurship

Board, National Book Trust are some of the agencies who have already committed software to the

channel. The channel also telecasts educational current affairs program.

Ministry of Human Resource Development, Information and Broadcasting, the

Prasar Bharti and IGNOU launched Gyan Darshan jointly on 26th January 2000 as the exclusive

educational television channel of India. The major contributing organizations for this channel are

IGNOU, UGC, NCERT, IIT, Different Ministries, and Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan etc. IGNOU was given

the responsibility to be the nodal agency for up linking, transmission. It started out as a two-hour daily

test transmission channel for students of open and conventional universities. This duration was

increased in February to nine hours a day. The time slot for transmission was further increased due to

good response and made up to sixteen hours. By beginning of November, it turned out to be nineteen

hours channel. Within one year of its launching, 26th January 2001, the channel had become non-stop

daily twenty-four hours transmission channel for educational programmes (IGNOU, 2002). The

programming constituted twenty three hours of indigenous programmes sourced from partner

institutions and one hour of foreign programmes. Transmission of twelve hours each for curriculum

based and enrichment programmes were being made. The programmes of IGNOU, CIET-NCERT had

been telecasted for four hours each, IIT programmes for three hours, CEC-UGC programmes for two

and a half hours and one hour each for TTTI and Adult Education, (IGNOU Profile 2002). Although

Gyan Darshan had made its presence felt in all open universities and most of the prominent

conventional universities, schools, it had potential to reach to the doorsteps of learners through cable

television network. Gyan Darshan through the cable transmission covered about 90% in Kerala, most

parts of Tamil Nadu, a few pockets in the North East, Nashik, Ahmedabad and Pune. Asia Net had been

providing it free of cost in Kerala. Efforts were being made to make Gyan Darshan available through

terrestrial transmission (IGNOU, 2002).

The Gyan DarshanI Channel, which was launched with an initial four hours

transmissions is today, free to air, round the clock TV channel, reaching out to millions of viewers across

the subcontinent. The Channel is today, Kaleidoscope offering a wide variety of education programs for

diverse audiences. It programmers include the country' wide classroom produced by CET, UGC

Tecnovion produced by IITS and Bhasha Mandakini On September 5 2003.

Subsequently exclusive channels were launched within Gyan Darshan bouquet to

address the specific needs of different sectors of higher education. Accordingly, GDII serves to distance

learners through real time interactive programs. Gyandarshan-2 and TDCC [Training Development

Communication Channel] are one way video and two-way audio satellite-based interactive system.

Gyan DarshanIII (Eklavya), offers programs for vocational and technical education and GDIV (Vayas),

serves to higher education sector. Plans are afoot to launch Gyan DarshanV channel which will be

dedicated exclusively to the program on science, technology and sustainable development. The test

transmission for this channel is already underway from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The programs for this

channel are being introduced by IGNOU, Vigyan Prasar, DST, Deutche welle, Transtel etc. As per recent

TAM data the channel enjoys a viewership of 8% in the seven metro cities of India. The 6 a.m. slot on

Gyan Darshan 1 is common with DD. The programs are telecast on both the channels simultaneously

From these we can find that, Television can be and has been effectively used for the

purpose of education.
