Background

The conversion of AC into DC is called Rectification. Electronic Devices can convert AC power
into DC power with high efficiency.

The objective of this experiment is to study the operation of Half- Wave Rectifier with and
without filter and to find its:

a. Percentage Regulation OR
b. Ripple Factor OR
c. Efficiency

Related to which lab?

This experiment is related to the KZ lab which is POWER ELECTRONICS: RECTIFIER

In this lab we need to understand the basic operation of a single phase and three phase bridge
type controlled rectifier circuit. For experiment 1 in this lab, we used a single phase full wave
controlled rectifier in order to understand the structure, operation and computational
method for this type of rectifier. While on experiment 3, we change the single phase full wave
rectifier to three phase full wave rectifier.

On top of that, we came out with an idea to do an experiment on HALF WAVE rectifier (with
and without filter) instead of using the FULL WAVE rectifier. So that, further analysis can be
done on this circuit, we can compare the results (between half and full wave rectifier),
compare the results for half wave rectifier with and without filter and make a conclusion on
the efficiency, percentage of regulation, ripple factor and others parameter.
Methodology

The primary side of the transformer will be connected to AC mains and the secondary side to
rectifier input. The maximum voltage of the AC input voltage (anode) of the rectifier and AC
voltage (cathode) at the output of the rectifier using a CRO. DC voltage at the load resistance
will be measured using a DC voltmeter. The waveform at the secondary windings of
transformer and across load resistance. The ripple factor, percentage of regulation and
efficiency are calculated by the following formula:

Percentage of regulation

Percentage of regulation

Without Filter:
Vrms = Vm / 2

Ripple factor (Theoretical)

Ripple Factor(practical)
With Filter:
Ripple Factor (Theoretical)

Ripple Factor(practical)

Percentage Regulation

%
VNL = DC voltage at the load without connecting the load (Minimum current).
VFL = DC voltage at the load with load connected.
Efficiency

PAC = V2rms / RL
PDC = Vdc / RL
