ABSTRACT

RELEVANCE OF EXPOSURE TO ULTRAVIOLET (UV) RAYS WITH


PTERYGIUM ON OJEK DRIVERS IN GROGOL PETAMBURAN
SUBDISTRICT
BACKGROUND:
Pterygium is a growth fibrovaskular conjunctival degenerative and invasive eyelid
cleft nasal or temporal conjunctiva which may extend into the cornea. Indonesian
Health Department in 2013 reported that the prevalence of pterygium is 8.3 percent
and prevalence of DKI Jakarta Province has pterygium prevalence around 3.7
percent. One of factors that influence pterygium is ultraviolet B (UVB) rays
exposure. Exposure to UV rays within a period of 5 hours and a minimum of 5 years
can cause pterygium on workers outside the room. Ojek driver are outdoor jobs are
often exposed to UV rays. Prevalence data on numbers and pterygium occurrence
due to working as ojek driver in Indonesia has not yet known, therefore the
researcher wants to observe the relation between pterygium occurrence due to UV
rays exposure on ojek driver in Indonesia.
METHOD:
The research methodology used in this research was analytic observational by using
cross sectional approach. Analysis of data using univariate analysis and biavariat.
For bivariate analysis the researchers used a fisher test. The responden of 62 ojek
drivers in Grogol Petamburan Subdistrict. The analysis is processed by using SPSS
program for windows version 17 with significance level used is 0.05.

RESULT:
There is significant relevance between UV rays exposure with pterygium
(p=0,000).

CONCLUSION:
in conclusion there is relevance between UV rays exposure with pterygium on ojek
drivers in Grogol Petamburan Subdistrict.
