ROAD SAFETY AUDIT

INTRODUCTION

In Malaysia, road safety has become the primary result of continuing high incidences
of road crashes. Fatalities due to road crashes are stated as one of the main causes of death in
the country. The World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics indicate that traffic crashes
have become a serious public health concern.

A Road Safety Audit is an evaluation of a highway improvement scheme during

design, at the end of construction and post-construction, to identify road safety problems and
to suggest measures to eliminate or mitigate any concerns. Road Safety Audits are undertaken
by teams of specialists trained in the skills of accident or road safety engineering

The Road Safety Audit helps to identify any potentially unsafe feature or operational
arrangement that may affect the safety of road users but only focuses on accident prevention.
It doesnt usually address the separate issue of accident reduction. It can be applied to all kind
of road projects such as new road constructions as well as rehabilitation of existing roads

OBJECTIVE

1. To identify road safety deficiencies at various stages in the development of road

projects/network
2. To reduce and prevent the rate of accidents.
3. To determine the problems occurs through the road

PROCEDURE

1. Choose an existing road, in our case a junction with six (6) movement patterns
2. Identify safety problems which develop due to normal wear and tear from traffic
operation.
3. Identify hazards due to the way the landscaping has matured, e.g. trees and foliage
obstructing traffic signs or sight distance impaired.

DISCUSSION

Road safety audit is one of the important parts in designing a road to ensure the users
of the road are safe and comfortable. Road accident is one of the elements which related to
road safety. Engineers need to prepare a good, comfortable and safe road for users. If this
happened, the frequency of accident occurred might be small.

By conducting road safety audit, we can observe the problems of the road and we can
find the solution to overcome the problems. According to road safety audit, there are few
problems observed along the road. There are a few yellow line blur and cannot see from long
distance. The giveway lane and exit lane is too short for any vehicle that pass through it
especially when peak hour..So,to solve this problem the giveway lane should be adjust to
become longer. For pedestrian walkway, there are not provided properly because the
arrangement of block are not properly and dangerous for pedestrian. It should be repair as
soon as possible to avoid unwanted things.

In other hand, there was provided signage No Parking at the roadside to warning the
driver not to park at the junction. It can cause accident if the other cars do not see the car that
park at the junction. The advertisement board also installed at strategic logic with big screen
so that the driver can read easily.

This audit reveals that there definitely need to improvement the road safety and the
junction. This eventually creates a better and safer junction environment for traffic operation.

.
CONCLUSION

Road safety is based on its road condition, road marking, signage and roadside
features. It can be seen that overall condition of these features are not well maintained.
Uneven pavement and blurred line of road markings can cause accidents to road users.
Recent rainfall also shows poor surface and make the road slippery and cause accident.
Therefore, it is recommended that these defects should be repaired and maintained in the
future for safety purposes of the pedestrians and road users in the area.
