Jessica Descendants of Captain Juan Cavazos

Part 1: The Family of Captain Juan Cavazos
Captain Juan Cavazos was the originator of the Cavazos surname in Northern
Mexico and Texas. He came to the New World in the service of his country
from he Village of Santa Maria, from the Province of Old Castile in Spain.
Captain Cavazos was the legitimate son of Gabriel Cavazos and Simona del
Campo, both of whom were residents of Santa Maria, Spain. His parents,
although having emigrated to Spain, were very likely of Italian ascendancy.

Captain Cavazos as a young adult entered New Spain in the conquest of "El
Nuevo Reino de Leon" in 1628. There he met and contracted marriage in 1630
with Doña Elena de la Garza, legitimate daughter of Captain Pedro de la Garza
and Doña Ines Rodriguez, both of her parents came from old and well
established families in New Spain (now Mexico). From this marriage nine
children were born, the barons adopted the paternal surname and the
doncellas adopted the maternal surname.

In the most ancient documents available, in reference to Juan Cavazos, dated

5 and 13 April 1628, where Juan appears as resident of Real y Minas de San
Gregorio (today Cerralvo). In both documents he signs as Juan Cabasso. In a
testimony in a letter in favor of his wife, the notary public writes his name as
Jhoan Cavaços, but the "s" was smudged. Later in the same testimony, the
name appears written as Cabasso. This document has been destroyed in the
section where the date is normally affixed. However, in the reverse side is
found handwritten, "1635 as (años) Carta de dote de mi Juo Cavasos." This
phrase translates to, "Year 1635 Letter of testimony from me Juan Cavasos."
From this epoch onward, his signature appears in various documents as, Juan
Cabassos, even though the official notaries continue to state his name as
Cavaço. In his ultimate voluntary last will and testament and two codicils,
created during the final years of 1700th century, there appears four times:
Cabassos. During those years his son of the same name and the Franciscan
priest signs his name as: Juan Cavasos.

Tara Hello all and especially to Jessica,

Jessica, thank you for providing such a concise outline of Juan Cavazos. I am a
descendant of Juana Cavazos and Charles Barnard. I will be traveling to Spain
soon and would love to visit the village of Santa Maria in Castilla y Leon. I am
wondering if you know if the village that Juan left 400 years is still there? I've
searched and do find a few villages in Spain called "Santa Maria." I found one
that is in the area that would have been Old Castile (Castilla la Vieja). It's
called Santa Maria de Cayon.

Any info you have is very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Jessica Hi Tara, I am not sure if Santa Maria de Cayon is the original city that
Captain Juan Cabasso (original name) is from, but it is likely since it was a port
city in a northern province of Spain. I will do a little more research and let you
know:)

Jessica Found this posting in a blog-- not sure of its validity and not promoting
it but its an interesting read.

my name is cristobal, i have been studying the cavazos name of mexico and
south texas...it turns out that cavazos is the corrupted form of the name
cabasso (http://home.att.net/~PTrodriguez.ptrinform/cavazos1.htm)...t...
originator of the cavazos name in mexico was juan cabasso- born in españa as
the the son of gabriel cabasso and simona del campo. as fate would have it, in
mexico the name of juan cabasso was changed into the name
(http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=%3A17955...) we have
today 'cavazos.' this name was 'hispanicized'if you will, for the original cabasso
name is a jewish name, gabriel cabasso was a 'maranno' or a cryto -jew,the
name was changed to cavazos to hide this fact
(http://www.avotaynu.com/wconnect/wc.isa?jg%7Ejgsys%7Ecjsi) much of the
orignal immigants to nuevo leon 'new lion of judah' were in fact jewish such as
the garza family, whom juan cabasso took a wife out of.
(http://www.jewishcuba.org/marranos.html) i found it very interesting for i
was believing that the cavazos and cabasso names were from the greek
kavazos- what is more probable to me now is that even the greek kavazos is
perhaps descended from the original jewish name cabasso- for many names in
the medditeranean are similar to cabasso. in so many words the cavaZos name
is derived from the jewish cabasso and that puts jewish ancestral blood within
the veins of us all.just look at some of the other cabasso in the united states

Tara Hi Jessica,

Thanks so much! I really really appreciate it. And Cristobal's blog posting is
fascinating! I'll have to post some photos of Juana Cavazos on here some time.
They are really wonderful photographs and her story is pretty amazing. I'll
have to post it too.

Have a good weekend,
