Smart Goal One

Objective I will begin to delve into research about disciplinary literacy and gain an
(SMART Goal) understanding of what it is, and how it may come to life in a science
classroom. I will explore many resources and start to develop a personalized
understanding of disciplinary literacy and its importance in education.
Teaching Quality Standard d) the subject disciplines they teach. They have completed a structured
TQS Connections program of studies through which they acquired the knowledge, concepts,
methodologies and assumptions in one or more areas of specialization or
subject disciplines taught in Alberta schools;
i) there are many approaches to teaching and learning. They know a broad
range of instructional strategies appropriate to their area of specialization and
the subject discipline they teach, and know which strategies are appropriate to
help different students achieve different outcomes;

Smart Goal Two
Objective I will . use my knowledge and understanding of disciplinary literacy and its
(SMART Goal) connection to science to shape my teaching practice and intentionally teach
disciplinary literacy to my students to guide their learning and understanding
of science.
Teaching Quality Standard i) there are many approaches to teaching and learning. They know a broad

p) the importance of guiding their actions with a personal, overall vision of the
purpose of teaching. They are able to communicate their vision, including how
it has changed as a result of new knowledge, understanding and experience;

I will always be learning about ways to better implement disciplinary literacy
into my science classes, and will learn from experts but also from experience.
This is going to be a journey I continue to pursue, even after my PS3
internship.

The Evidence - I will have lessons and activities that were designed to use
