Lesson Summary
In this lesson, students will be given a perimeter and will create their own shapes that matches said
perimeter. Students will be able to solve problems pertaining to perimeter, including those that do not
have all of the side lengths given to them.
Subject Area
Math

Grade Level
2nd

Higher Order Thinking Skills (Revised Blooms)

Create: students will create their own shapes with a certain perimeter
Evaluating: students will argue why their cheese it made shapes have the correct perimeter
Analyzing: students will have to analyze different shapes to determine which shape has the largest
perimeter
Applying: students will have to apply the knowledge learned to participate in whole class discussions and
create their own shapes, as well as solve problems given to them
Understanding: students will have to understand and explain why counting, skip counting, and performing
standard addition is important
Remembering: students will need to remember how to count, skip count, and perform standard addition
Approximate Time Needed for Lesson
One hour

Common Core Standards and/or State of Michigan GLCEs and/or HSCEs

Add and subtract within 20.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.B.2
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from
memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes
The students will be able to find perimeters of various shapes when given all side
lengths.
The students will be able to find perimeters of various shapes when all side lengths are
not given.
When given a perimeter, the students will be able to create a shape with the same
perimeter.
After finding several perimeters, the students will be able to determine which perimeter
is the largest.
Curriculum-Framing Questions
Essential Question When might we find or create a perimeter in our lives? When do we add and
solve problems in our lives?

Unit Questions What is a perimeter? How would knowing how find perimeters help us solve
math problems or problems in our daily lives?
Content Questions Why is it important to know how to find the perimeter of different shapes?
Assessment Summary
Formative assessment: During the lesson, the formative assessment will include how
well the students answer classroom questions during the lesson, as well as how well they
create shapes with the correct perimeter with their partners.

Summative assessment: At the end of the lesson, the students will be assessed at how
accurately they complete the Presenting Perimeter worksheet and Piggys House
Hunting worksheet.

Prerequisite Skills

Instructional Procedures

1) Introduce the objective of the lesson. Today, we are going to be finding the
perimeter of different shapes. Has anyone here ever heard of the word perimeter
before? [Discuss] Why might finding the perimeter of different shapes or objects
be important, or when could we use them in our lives? [Discuss]
2) Have the students make a single file line and walk around the classroom,
touching the walls. Explain that the walls are the borders of the classroom, and if
we wanted to find the perimeter of the classroom, we would measure the lengths
of the walls and add them.
3) Model finding the perimeter on the Smart Board (or white board). Draw various
rectangles, triangles, and squares on the board with the measurements of the
sides written next to the sides it corresponds to.
4) After modeling, call students up to the board and invite them to solve the
problems as well.
5) Discuss that in instances, we may only know some of the side lengths (for
example, a rectangle). Discuss that we can find the missing side length by looking
at the other sides that are equal to that side.
6) Draw a shape on the board that is missing a side length. How could I find the
perimeter of this object? Go over several problems like this, calling on students
to come up to the board to solve as well.
7) Sometimes, we might not have an easy shape like a square or a rectangle
Draw a polygon, an octagon, an abstract shape, etc. This is fine! All we have to
do is add up every side. Go over a few problems like this.
8) Hand out cheese-it crackers to students. Students will now work in pairs to create
shapes with whatever perimeter is instructed to them. For example, instruct, I
am looking for a rectangle that is 10 inches in perimeter (Assume that one
cheese it is one inch). Talk about how everyone could have a different looking
rectangle, but all the perimeters could be the same- ex, 3,3,2,2 side lengths or
4,4,1,1 side lengths).
9) Go over various scenarios like this.
10) Have the students complete the Presenting Perimeter worksheet independently.
11) Go over the worksheet with the students as a class.
12) Have the students complete Piggys House Hunting worksheet. Go over the
worksheet with the students as a class.

the presenting perimeter worksheet/eliminate a few houses that do not
have the largest value.
Have the students create their own shapes using a ruler. Instruct the

students to measure each side of their shape and find the perimeter of it.
