N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Lauren Real Date of Activity: 10/30/17 Faculty name: Bev Bias

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

I attended an ACLS training and certification class with a few of my classmates. The
purpose was to learn the algorithms that are necessary to follow as a nurse when a patient has
certain emergent heart rhythms such as asystole, pulseless electrical activity, ventricular
tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. Each algorithm states which drugs to give and whether or
not to shock the patient. Additionally, we did a brief review of BLS CPR during the class.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

This class was held at Eclipse CPR. The class itself was about 6 hours long. It was from
9am-3pm on October 30th, 2017. There was also a required pre-test that took 2 hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

This experience was very valuable to me because it is information that will be very useful
when I begin my career in the ICU. Codes can happen frequently in this type of environment, and
I want to be able to know what to do if they ever occur. I did know BLS CPR before this, so I
would have been able to participate in chest compressions, but with the ACLS training, I now
know which drugs to give and why they are crucial when a patient experiences certain heart
rhythms. I had also been wanting to take this class for a while, so it was nice to finally do it.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend this experience in the future because it is very valuable training to
receive, especially if one wants to work in a hospital setting. This training allows all those that
take it to be leaders in code situations. It also increases the rate of survival in those that code in
the hospital because it teaches healthcare providers exactly what to do when the situation occurs.
