ABOUT THE CONFERENCE SERIES

Editor-in-Chief of the AACRs journal, Molecular Cancer Research, Dr. Karen E. Knudsen, described
the Middlegame Theory, Cancer Style, comparing future strategies of cancer research to that
of the middlegame in chess. That is, the time when piece placement has developed, loose
understanding of potential paths forward has emerged, action and reaction requires lateral thinking
to gain advantage, anticipating next moves becomes essential, and the skirmishes begin. Successful
middlegame play, albeit challenging, is the gateway to a successful endgame. In the parallel to
cancer research, thanks to advances in basic, translational, and clinical research, many key pieces
have been placed (i.e., identification of oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, causative mutations,
cancer signaling pathways unraveled, cancer vulnerabilities exposed), and all of these pieces are in
place to consider strategy to the ultimate endgame. We are in the middlegame of cancer research,
and Dr. Knudsen emphasizes the importance of innovative basic cancer research to reach the
endgame.

This biennial broad-based meeting will provide a forum for the presentation of the state of
cancer research in the most studied subspecialties in basic cancer research and opportunities for
collaboration that is essential in identifying the needs in the basic cancer research community that
will contribute to the endgame of cancer prevention and treatment in the clinic.

This has been a very popular meeting with students (graduate or medical) and fellows (clinical or
postdoctoral) as it and covers the hottest topics in basic science in a small setting; in fact, since the
inaugural meeting in 2009, this cohort represents 50% of attendees.

Please join us in the AACRs hometown of Philadelphia, PA, for this exciting program featuring the
most current topics in basic cancer research presented by the fields leading experts.

Mentoring roundtables with invited speakers will occur during breakfast and lunch each afternoon.

Registration Process
Individuals wishing to attend the conference must register either
online at www.AACR.org/MeetingsCalendar (follow the link to the
Frontiers in Basic Cancer Research conference) or by returning,
by mail or fax, the registration form found on the conference
registration webpage. Places at the conference are on a first-come,
first-served basis, according to date of registration. The Advance
Registration Rates are available until Friday, September 11, 2015.
Registration forms will not be processed without full payment. Copies
of checks, government, or other payment orders cannot be accepted.
All fees must be in U.S. currency, drawn on a U.S. bank. Visa,
MasterCard, and American Express are also accepted for payment.

Attendee registration includes admission to all lecture sessions,
poster sessions, conference continental breakfasts on October 23,
24, 25, and 26, refreshment breaks, and refreshments during the
poster sessions on October 24 and 25. All fees are listed in U.S.
dollars (USD).
AACR members must include their member ID number on
the registration form or log into their member account when
registering online to obtain the member rates (member dues must
be paid through 2015 prior to registering). Online registrations

There will be opportunities at breakfast on the mornings of
October 24, 25, and 26 and lunch on October 23, 24, and 25
where early-career investigators and students can sign up to meet
with conference speakers and other experts. If you would like

conference. Places are limited and available on a first-come, first-
served basis. The opportunity to sign up ahead of time will be sent
via email prior to the conference, but attendees may also sign up

Refund Policy
Requests for refunds must be made in writing and received by
the AACR Meetings Department by September 25, 2015. There
will be a $75 processing fee for cancellations by September 25,
2015. After September 25, 2015, no refunds can be given. Refund

The conference will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center
and the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown in Philadelphia, PA. The
Philadelphia Marriott Downtown commands a distinctive presence
with its towering profile in the heart of Philadelphia; the hotels
downtown location surrounds guests with rich revolutionary history
and culture reflective of the citys 18th century service as the
nations capital.
A reduced conference rate of $229 per night is available
to conference attendees until Tuesday, September 29,

Women in Cancer Research (WICR)
Scholar Awards
AACR-WICR members in good standing who are graduate
and medical students, residents, and postdoctoral and clinical
fellows are eligible to apply for the Women in Cancer Research
Scholar Awards, which provide funding to offset a portion of the
registration, travel, and subsistence expenses incurred in attending
this conference. The award application deadline is Tuesday,
August 4. Additional information and application instructions are

AACR Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) Faculty
Scholar in Cancer Research Awards
The AACR offers awards in cancer research for participation in its
meetings and conferences to full-time faculty of Minority-Serving
Institutions who are scientists at the Assistant Professor level or
above. This program is supported by a generous grant from the
Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities of the National Cancer
Institute. The purposes of the awards are to increase the scientific
knowledge base of faculty members at MSIs, to encourage them
in their research, and to assist in inspiring their students to pursue
careers in cancer research. For more information about this award
program, please visit the AACR-Minorities in Cancer Research
section of the AACR website.
AACR Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Awards
The AACR is pleased to administer this important award program
that is supported by a generous grant from the Center to Reduce
Cancer Health Disparities of the National Cancer Institute (NCI)
and provides funds for the participation of meritorious minority
scientists in AACR meetings and conferences. Eligible scientists are
full-time predoctoral (graduate or medical) students or residents,
clinical or postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty who are either
engaged in cancer research or who have the training and potential
to make contributions to this field. This program applies only to
racial/ethnic minority groups that have been identified by the
NCI as being traditionally underrepresented in cancer and
biomedical research. These groups are African American/Black,
Alaska Native, Hispanic American, Native American, and Native
Pacific Islander. Only citizens of the United States or Canada
or scientists who are permanent residents of these countries
may receive one of these awards. For more information about

AACR Membership
