A single vehicle rollover crash occurred on I-72 westbound at milepost 179, killing a 17-year-old female driver from Monticello, IL. According to preliminary investigation, the vehicle was traveling eastbound when it left the roadway, struck the guardrail on one side of the highway, crossed the median and all westbound lanes, and struck the guardrail on the other side, causing the vehicle to roll over multiple times and ejecting the 20-year-old male passenger from Allerton, IL. The driver was transported to the hospital where she later died from her injuries, while the passenger remains in critical condition. It is presumed neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt.

WHERE: I-72 Westbound at Milepost 179 WHEN: November 28, 2017 at 3:53 pm DRIVER: Female, 17, Monticello, IL (Name not being released at this time.) PASSENGER: Male, 20, Allerton, IL (Name not being released at this time.) VEHICLE: Silver 2005 Scion PRELIMINARY: Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Officers are investigating a single vehicle rollover fatal crash on I-72 westbound at milepost 179. Preliminary crash investigation shows the vehicle was eastbound on I-72 at milepost 179 when it left the roadway, struck the eastbound guardrail at the Rising Road Overpass, crossed the center median, crossed all westbound lanes, and then struck the westbound guardrail on the north side of the shoulder. The collision with the guardrail caused the vehicle to roll over multiple times, ejecting the male passenger and partially ejecting the female passenger. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were transported to local hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The passenger remains in critical condition. I-72 westbound was closed for approximately four hours for the traffic crash reconstruction. The crash is still under investigation. SEATBELTS: It is presumed the driver and passenger were not wearing seatbelts.
