Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

The professional activity I attended was an informational clinic on the national and state-wide
public health concern of opiate addiction. The purpose of this clinic was to provide the public
about information on what the opiate epidemic is, how it affects national and local populations,
why its an issue, tips on how to combat the problem, and how to safely dispose of prescription
drugs.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

This clinic was held at the Abrams Public Health Center, and it ran from 9:30am to 11:30am.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

As a current employee at the local VA hospital and as a potential future RN at this hospital, the
clinic is very valuable to me because it gave me a lot of useful information and new insight on
opiate use and addiction. Many veterans self-medicate or have chronic pain, and substance abuse
and addiction run rampant in this population. Having this information on hand allows me to
understand these issues occurring with this patient population in a different way.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend this professional experience for the future because it was short, easy, and
provided a lot of useful information on substance abuse for new graduate nurses.
