SIOP Lesson Plan

Grade 5

Standards: CC.2.3.5.A.2
Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on an understanding of their properties

Theme: Polygons and Parallelograms

Lesson Topic: Classify shapes based on whether or not they follow the rules of a polygon or
parallelogram

Objectives:
Language:
-Students will be able to use vocabulary and read descriptions of two-dimensional objects to
determine what type of shape they are classified as.
-Students will be able to discuss different properties of shapes in their math journal through
writing and using the vocabulary taught at the beginning of the lesson.
Content:
-Students will be able to classify two-dimensional objects based on their properties.
-Students will separate shapes based on whether they are a parallelogram or polygon.
-Students will use multiple different shapes to form other shapes based on properties.
-Students will use worksheets to combine shapes to make a new polygons.

Learning Strategies:
- Partnering (do some problems in groups)*******
- It will help with the students struggling get help without teacher having to help
them. Teacher cant get to everyone
- Teacher Modeling (I We You)
- Teacher does one, then does one with class, then students do it. It will help
show if students understand alone.
- Graphic organizers
- Definitions- it will help them take notes faster so they dont have to spend as
long writing and can listen.

Key Vocabulary:
- Pentagon
- Parallelogram
- Congruent
- Polygon
- Right angle
- Quadrilateral

Materials:
-Scissors
-Worksheet
-Pencils
-Glue
-Math journal

Motivation: The students in the class are 50% Hispanic and come from Spanish speaking
families at home. The unit and lesson topic of two-dimensional, geometric shapes is used
because shapes do not change from language to language. Students who do not speak English
may still be allowed to acknowledge shapes, even in their own language.

The students will be motivated throughout this lesson because they enjoy shapes and the arts.
Their culture respects the arts and thoroughly studies art history. The use of geometric shapes
in art connects the students classroom work to the art they often saw in their environment
growing up. The students will be able to feel included in the lesson and learn about
two-dimensional shapes through their prior knowledge and experience with shapes and
cultural arts.

Presentation:
This is a cumulative lesson plan about shapes and geometry. This specifically focuses on
two-dimensional shapes and how their properties may classify them as a quadrilateral or a
polygon.

Daily presentation starts with review and repetition of words involved with geometry. There
will be a review of basic shapes which students should already have an idea about. Then there
will be repetition of new words which will be introduced for the lesson. Students will respond
to questions asked by the teacher. They will also be asked to repeat the vocabulary words
several times to properly pronounce and understand their meanings.

The curriculum is introduced through the visible presentation of two-dimensional shapes.

Students do a think, pair, share about what they already know about two-dimensional shapes
and their properties. The students share language skills and improve oral comprehension when
talking with one another they explore their prior knowledge. The teacher presents new
vocabulary and paraphrasing for the students.

Practice and Application:

The students will be asked to create a series of different shapes and a graphic organizer to
distinguish the difference between shapes and their properties.

-Cutting shapes
-Labeling
-Create graphic organizer

Review and Assessment:

Completed work is shared through each students math journals. They will cut out the shapes
and glue them in their math journals. Next to each shape, they will write down the properties
of that specific shape. The teacher will observe to make sure vocabulary and proper language
is being used.

Extension:
The lesson can be extended by introducing three dimensional figures to the students,
specifically a cube. They will have a worksheet with a cube outline on it. The students will cut
along the solid lines and fold the along the dotted lines to form their cube shape. The students
will then examine the new shape they have made and discuss the properties of the
three-dimensional shape. They will discuss with their partners how the shapes from the
original lesson, and the extended activity are different and similar.
Vocabulary
Pentagon - a shape with 5 sides
Parallelogram - a four sided shape with opposite sides parallel
Congruent - equal, the same
Polygon - a place shape with straight sides
Right angle - an angle that is 90 degrees, like a corner
Quadrilateral - a four sided shape

Steps for the procedure:

1. Go over basic shapes and their properties (prior knowledge - triangle, circle, square)
2. Go over the vocabulary and do the activity on the smartboard along with the math journal
activity
3. Video
4. Extended activity with 3D shapes and cut out
5. *if time - compare shapes glued into math journal and the 3D shapes that were made with
a graphic organizer (on the board)*
