Doc Xylitol ( An Alter-Ego of Dr. Russell dedicated to Preventodontics) Shows how To Stop Dayton Ohio
Tooth Decay the easy way.
Chewing a couple of pieces of xylitol chewing gum after each meal could reduce the amount of tooth decay
But sometimes it would be very convenient to chew gum as alternative oral hygiene.
WHAT IS XYLITOL?
Xylitol tastes sweet but, unlike sugar, it is not converted in the mouth to acids that cause tooth decay. It
reduces levels of decay-causing bacteria in saliva and also acts against some bacteria that cause ear
infections.
Few people realize that tooth decay bacteria are like an infection transmissible from one person to another.
During the first few months that we begin to get our Baby Teeth we all catch the decay bacteria from our
primary caregivers.
But then the tooth surfaces develop a plaque layer composed of the different types of mouth bacteria.
If there are no decay-causing bacteria around when this first plaque develops, later, they will have a harder
time sticking onto the tooth surface,-they will be Crowded-Out.
There was 70% less decay in the children –but the children didn’t chew the gum- Mom did!
to Eat
Chewing for 5 minutes is recommended, because that is when the concentration of xylitol in the saliva is
greatest.
If the service member is in a field environment where only MREs are served, then 3 MREs daily with 2 xylitol
chewing gum pellets per MRE would represent the minimum recommended 3 times a day.
This amount is equivalent to the recommended dosage of 5-10 grams of xylitol per day. (The maximum is 2
pieces 5 times a day.)
The only known side effect is Mild Diarrhea at much higher doses than needed to achieve tooth protection.
What is the “Dose” of chewing gum that was used in these studies?
Not all
Xylitol chewing gums
are equal.
Epic, for instance has over 5 times the Xylitol Content of TRIDENT.
Many gums contain trace amounts of xylitol but not enough for tooth proection..
Brands
While no formal recommendation for xylitol dosing exists, from research such as that referenced on this
page, conclusions can be drawn. For an adult, the following regimen would seem to be reasonable and one
expected to produce an optimal anti-cavity effect.
This regimen needs to be continued for six months to a year before it can be assumed that an optimal level
of cavity protection has been created.

Be wary when you see the big guys advertise xylitol – they like to promote that a little goes a long way. We
don’t disagree – with anything but their murky definition of “little.” They should say “miniscule,” or “barely
any,” or “you should really just chew Epic.”
