4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book: Introduce the book. The Talking Vegetables? Do
vegetables talk? Have your vegetables ever spoken to you? Who likes
to eat vegetables? What are your favorite vegetables? Mine are sweet
potatoes!
Begin reading the book and pause periodically to explain what is happening in the
story. Uh oh Spider does not want to help his friends. What do you
think will happen?
When the book is done reiterate the moral of the story. Spider did not want to
help his friends, so they had to work very hard to get food. Because
Spider did not want to help, he wasnt able to get food. Being selfish
does more harm than good! Do you know what being selfish means? It
means that we only care about ourselves and we do not help the
people who love us. Is being selfish a good thing or a bad thing?

B. Extension activity: Today we are going to work together in teams to help our
friends! Get into two lines. Two of you will pair up and grab
one side of this paper towel. You must work together to
balance the apple on the towel while you walk to the basket.
Once you get to the basket then you must work together to
put the apple into the basket. The apple will roll around so
talk to your partner to figure out the best way to balance it.
If you make the apple into the basket you get a lollipop.

5. Closure:
Ask the children if working together helped them.
Ask the children to tell their partner about a time they were
selfish.
Reiterate that being selfish not only hurts others but it also
hurts ourselves.
