The First Sunday of Advent

Greetings of Advent Peace.

Maximum efficiency is often the goal in the worlds of business and technology. Many people make a living tinkering with
electronic and other processes to help them go faster. Certain kinds of changes are almost always viewed as positive.
Can we do this in fewer steps? Can we do this step faster? Can this step be done with fewer people, or eliminated
altogether?

While that formula typically leads to success in the world of business and technology, its important to remind ourselves
not to mindlessly carry that same formula into other parts of our life. In the world of Christian Spirituality, often the goal is
precisely the opposite. We improve our spiritual life by slowing down. We grow by being attentive to and helping people
who move slowly and perhaps even inefficiently: those advanced in years, children, the sick, the poor. Jesus speaks
profoundly to us in quiet moments when nothing is getting accomplished.

And so, we are at the beginning of another Advent the time of waiting for the baby Jesus. May this holy season
become a growth-filled time of great inefficiency for you.

The Franciscan Food Center at the Shrine recently had our distribution of food to the poor prior to Thanksgiving. Here
are some facts and figures about that one-day distribution to our Food Center members:

Finally, thank you everyone who participated in the Giving Tuesday event on November 28. You helped to raise

Year-End Gifts
As the end of the year approaches, we invite you to consider making a tax-deductible gift to the Shrine.
There are a number of ways to make this gift.

1. Cash/check - may be given in person or via the U.S mail. Please note that the gift must be postmarked
by December 31 to be counted for a 2017 tax deduction.

2. Credit card Make a gift on line www.stanthontshrine.org with a credit card. Or, you may call the
Development Office (857-206-7243) and give your credit card over the telephone. Our electronic giving
kiosks in the lobby, and at the information booth are two other options for credit card gifts.

3. IRA Charitable Rollover If you or someone you know is 70 or older and has a traditional Individual
Retirement Account (IRA), you can use your required minimum distribution to support the Shrine through
a Charitable Rollover gift. Contact the administrator of your plan and ask that your distribution be a
charitable rollover to the Shrine.

4. Matching Gifts A corporate matching gift is a tremendous way to increase your personal gift to the
Shrine. We encourage you to take advantage of your employers matching gift program.

join us as we say the rosary as a young adult community. A rosary and rosary
guide will be available for you. No experience necessary - we will do a tutorial at
the beginning of the meeting.
Saturday, 12/2 at 4 PM in the 2nd floor classroom we will have our annual
Young Adult Ugly Sweater Christmas Party! Don your favorite ugly Christmas
swear and bring a dish to share. We will be ordering pizza, so you must
complete the RSVP form. Email us for details!
Sunday, 12/10 at 1:45 PM Volunteer at the Cambridge Rehabilitation and
Nursing Center (8 Dana Street, Central Square T stop, Cambridge). We are
scheduled to help set up Mass for Seniors and then socialize with the Seniors
after Mass. You must RSVP to participate.
Wednesday, 12/13 from 6-7 PM in the 2nd floor classroom. 20s/30s Advent
Reflection with Fr. Damian. "I am longing for your coming". Christmas comes
every year, the Lord's day comes every week, and the Sun rises every morning
without fail, but Lord, when will you come?
Sunday, 12/17, from 11-12:30, Brunch n Bible Study at Uno Due Go (next door
to the Shrine). We will discuss the 12/17 Gospel and enjoy a BYO brunch. No
Bible or Bible Study experience necessary and we will have you out in time for
the 12:30 PM Mass!
