Analyze Learners
1. 19 Total Students
2. 10 Females / 9 Males
3. 6-7
4. Mental, Social, Physical, Social Notes such as:
o 2 students with an IEP who may require working with a peer or the opportunity
to repeat the lesson during core replacement.
5. To establish the students prior knowledge, I will have them line up around the room,
by order of: girl, boy, girl, boy etc. After the students have done that, I will explain to
them that what they just created out of themselves was a pattern. The pattern of: girl,
boy, girl, boy etc.

State Objectives
SC Standard Course of Study Objective:
(First grade math)
1.ATO.9 The learner will be able to create, extend, and explain patterns and simple m
using pictures and words for:
The learner will recognize, determine, and represent patterns and simple
mathematical relationships by extending and finding missing pieces of repeating and
growing patterns by using pattern blocks as a guide.

Patterns. Students will discuss with their shoulder partner what they know about patterns.
Students will watch and participate with continuing a pattern on the IXL Learning website. In
a notebook lesson created by the teacher students will have practice with completing a
growing pattern by manipulating the objects and numbers on the smartboard. Students will
then use the smartboard to play games with patterns on the weebly interactive site for
education while on the carpet.
Group/Partner: Students will play Fan-n-Pick with their group. Each student will have a job.
Whiteboards will be used to write what comes next in the pattern. Students will rally coach
with making and completing growing patterns with shoulder partner using pattern blocks.
Individual: Students will complete an exit slip with growing patterns to show understanding.
Early finishers can get on weebly interactive site for education to play games while teacher
helps students who need support.
Media:
Smart Notebook (created by the teacher)
Brain Pop Jr. video on Patterns
IXL Learning website on Growing Patterns
Weebly Interactive Site for Education Games with Patterns
Materials:
Internet Connection
Fan-n-Pick Cards
Whiteboard, marker, and eraser
Pencil
Exit Slips
Pattern Blocks
Interactive Notebook (Teacher produced)
Smartboard
Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods
1. Preview the materials: BrainPop Jr. Video, IXL Learning website, interactive site for
education on patterns, Teacher created Lesson in Notebook lesson
2. Prepare the materials: Create Notebook lesson on patterns/growing patterns, Create
Fan-n-Pick cards, make 10 pattern block bags for partners, create exit slip
3. Prepare the environment: Students are grouped by levels (High will work with High-
Medium, Medium will work with Medium-Low), Smartboard, speakers,
lighting/temperature/welcoming classroom environment.
4. Prepare the learners: Have students line up girl boy and discuss that we have made a
pattern; students will have think time and discuss what a pattern is with their shoulder
partner.
5. Provide the learning experiences: Kagan Cooperative Groups (Think Pair Share, Fan-n-
Pick, Rally Coach)

Require Learner Participation
Warm-Up: Make a girl boy pattern with students. Ask students what a pattern is? Can they
see one in our room? Turn and talk with shoulder partner (5 minutes- Think Time and Talk
Time)
Input: BrainPop Jr. (7 minutes) Student will turn and talk with their shoulder partner what
they know about patterns. (20 minutes) Teacher will TEACH about patterns and growing
patterns. Students will interact with the notebook lesson as well as the IXL Learning activity.
Students will interact with smartboard interactive site for education with patterns.
Guided Practice: (7 minutes) Students will work with their group of four to complete the
Fan-n-Pick activity. (10 minutes) Students with then rally coach with their shoulder partner.
Each group will be given a bag of pattern blocks. Each student will take turns starting a
pattern. Each partner will have to finish their partners pattern and/or fill in missing pieces of
their partners pattern using the pattern blocks. Each partner must create at least two
different patterns for their partner to finish or fill in missing terms for.
Independent Practice: (5 minutes) Students will complete the exit slips on
patterns/growing patterns. To assess each individual student, I will hand out a worksheet
that involves filling in missing pieces for patterns/growing patterns or finishing them. The
worksheet will involve patterns with numbers, colors, and shapes. Each student will be
expected to complete the worksheet on their own to turn in for a grade.
Closure: Student will have 2-3 minutes to share with a classmate (Stand-Up/Hand Up/Pair
Up) what they know about patterns/growing patterns.
