Implications for Practice

As a middle school administrator, it is crucial to understand the

emotional/psychological, biological and physiological changes that occur
for our middle school students. By being cognizant of the changes that
occur during this stage of life, we can be better prepared for how middle
school students operate and interact with the students accordingly.

To counterbalance what students are exposed to through social media,

middle schools can aid in educating students properly through
educational programs, projects and presentations about maintaining a
healthy lifestyle, teenage pregnancy, and the risks of using drugs and/or
alcohol. We must maintain a zero tolerance for bullying within the school
environment and facilitate activities that will foster relationship-building
and an atmosphere of respect.

The middle school curriculum, while adhering to Common Core State

Standards, should incorporate topics that will appeal to the interests of
early adolescents and challenge their thinking on topics such as equity,
environmental awareness, discrimination and living in poverty. It is
essential that we facilitate an environment that is safe, encouraging, and
supportive of the needs of early adolescents. Key in leading such an
environment is the ability to find and maintain a staff of well-informed,
well-versed members who not only model positive behaviors but challenge
the students daily through upholding high standards for rigor, academic
achievement, and the development of a growth mindset.
