Again, High Cholesterol is Not a Disease

While reading the May, 08 issue of Clinical Advisor for Physician Assistants, I found an article about treatment
of high cholesterol. This referred to a 24 month study which followed 720 people who were being treated with
Vytorin (combination of Zocor/Simvastatin and Zetia/Ezetimibe) for hereditary hyperlipidemia (high Cholesterol). As
a group they showed substantially lower LDL Cholesterol levels, but there was no change in the amount of plaque
built up in the carotid arteries.
This is interesting because it is similar to the general observation that for the last twenty years there has been no
significant decrease in deaths from heart disease and strokes, even though millions of people are taking medications
to lower their cholesterol.
In natural health circles, we think that cholesterol levels should be used as a marker for inflammation in the
walls of the arteries. If the cholesterol is high, it means there is inflammation. This suggests that just treating the
cholesterol to lower the numbers does not alter the amount of inflammation and does not change the amount
of plaque in the arteries. But, reducing the inflammation in the arteries will reduce the amount of plaque and the
numbers.
So how can we reduce this inflammation? We must both build and cleanse. Start with omega 3 essential fatty
acids, fish oil or flaxseed oil. They are excellent for reducing that arterial inflammation. I like flaxseed oil better,
because it does not burp up like the fish oil. It is best if you take 4000 mg per day,
usually in two doses with food. Drinking adequate amounts of chlorine-free water is very
important; chronic dehydration causes a lot of damage. In general, one third to one half
your body weight in fluid ounces, up to 100 ounces per day, is the recommended amount
of water we need. For example, it you weight 150# you need between 50 and 75 oz. per
day. Max 100 oz. per day, unless you doing a lot of sweating, then you need more.
Cleanse your body by reducing and stopping smoking, excess alcohol, coffee, fumes,
chlorinated water, trans fats, microwave cooking, food additives, excess sugar, stress, and
large portions. These all significantly increase free radicals and inflammation. Elimination of
these will cleanse the system and greatly reduce the damage inside the arteries.
Avoiding inflammatory food, based on your blood type will also help a lot. Try this for
three months, then check your numbers, and you will be surprised.
