n Wunsch receives award for
years of dedicated advocacy
NEWAYGO — Art Wunsch has served his coun-
try and community well during his long and very
rich life. Born in 1917 in Detroit into a loving and
talented family, he learned the valued life lessons of
those times. He learned the greatness of music, the
joy of family, and how to find the positives in all of
life’s challenges. He served his country valiantly in
World War II in Britain, North Africa, and Italy. He
then returned to the love of his family and Michi-
gan.
He attended Wayne State University, achieving a
BA in Instrumental Music, and University of Michi-
gan for a Masters of Arts in School Administration.
In 1950, he found his way to Newaygo County and
married Virginia Fish. He was briefly swayed from
Newaygo County by Muskegon Public Schools but
returned to Newaygo County to serve the White
Cloud Schools as the high school principal. In 1956,
Art took over the marching band, returning to his
musical roots. In 1976 he became the school guid-
ance counselor. He and Virginia raised two children
here who are now parents and professionals in our
community.
In 1986 Art reached out to his community in an-
other way. When he could have been thinking about
kicking back to enjoy his family and music, he de-
cided to serve his county. He applied to the Board of
Commissioners and was appointed to the Newaygo
County Mental Health Board of Directors. For 21
years, through many significant changes in the state
and in mental health services, Art held himself and
the Board to his creed, “We do it all for those we
serve. Don’t ever forget who this is for.”
On Aug. 10, Art Wunsch, surrounded by his lov-
ing and proud family, received from Newaygo Coun-
ty Mental Health Board of Directors the Art Wunsch

‘RINGING in the FUN…at 71!’

Festival presents new events: All-American Lumberjack
Show, golf outing, 3-on-3 basketball tournament

The red Flannel Festival Board of Directors has been
working diligently to provide fresh new events for the
71st “ringing in the Fun at 71!” Festival celebration.
“The board has added over 20 new events in the last few
years,” said President Michele Andres. “This board is
extremely dedicated to ensuring the red Flannel Festi-
val the biggest and best ever! We’re already working on
plans for BIG nEW EVEnTS for the 72nd celebration in
2011!”
Last year’s new events, the Fireworks Show, remote
Control Airplane Demonstration and Skydivers had out-
standing participation and will be back again in 2010!
nEW this year, the Festival will debut a GoLF ouT-
InG, on Sunday, September 26 at north Kent Golf
Course, led by Chairperson Jason Bailey. Cost is just $50
per person and is a 4-person scramble.
The All-American Lumberjack Show will arrive on
Friday, oct. 1 with a Kids’ Lumberjack Camp and Saw-
ing Contest (audience participation!) at 6:30 pm, and
on red Flannel Day, Saturday, oct. 1, will perform three
shows, in addition to Chain Saw Carving Demonstra-
tions throughout the day.
The Festival has partnered with Cedar Springs Area
Parks & recreation Department to host the 3-on-3 Bas-
ketball Tournament on Saturday, September 25. Aman-
da Gerhardt, Director of CS Area Parks & recreation is
leading the organizational efforts. The qualifying rounds
will be played behind Cedar View Elementary, and the
finals will be held downtown at Beech and Main Streets.

The Festival has granted 501c3 non-profit status and
all donations are tax deductible. The Festival is an inde-

City Hospital. Taylor Renae Smith was born
on Aug. 10, 2010 at 6:19 pm. She weighed
6 lbs. 14 ozs. and was 19-1/2 inches long.

long. Amaya has one brother, Drew Ken-
dall Lacic. Grandparents are Herman and
Edith Kosten of Greenville, Robert Lacic of
Belding, and Paula Lacic of Belmont. The
mother is the former Amber Kosten.

worked to create Michigan College
Goal Sunday to assist students in
completing the forms necessary to
apply for financial aid. With her as-
sistance, the program has expanded
from 10 to 30 sites across the state.
“This acknowledgement was a
wonderful gift to me,” Powell said. “I
believe that we are all on this Earth
for a purpose and that purpose is to

make this world a better place for
present and future generations. In
attempting to fulfill that purpose for
my life, my desire has always been to
help others. I believe that this recog-
nition gives me hope that I have ac-
complished a small part of my pur-
pose for being on this Earth.”
“I am humbled and very much
appreciate this honor,” she said.
Powell earned a Bachelor of Arts
Degree in Psychology from Jor-
dan College in 1979, where she also
served as Director of Financial Aid
from 1973 through 1993 before join-
ing MCC’s team in December 1993.
Powell will retire from MCC on Aug.
31.
“Becky has been a consistent
source of professionalism and service
to our students,” said MCC President
Bob Ferrentino. “She is truly a caring
helpful person with a genuine inter-
est in students’ welfare, and she has
demonstrated that time and again
during her 17 years with the college.

A growing need: Protect your youngsters

Livestock farmers have been
blessed with great hay yields this sum-
mer. Dairy farmers have reported
fantastic haylage yields in the first
three crops resulting in limited stor-
age space for the upcoming corn silage
harvest. Most farms are expecting two
more hay harvests plus record corn si-
lage yields of 20 to 25 tons per acre are
possible. United States Department
of Agriculture (USDA) has estimated
that Michigan’s corn crop will yield
156 bushels per acre. This smashes
last year’s record Michigan corn yield
of 148 bushels per acre! Where can you
put all this forage and the extra corn?
This is a great problem to have. If
you have not started already to make
more space than a great option is to
use a silo bag. Bagging advantages
include lower capital cost, flexibility
in storage and forage quality and less
storage loss. You have a smaller feed
out face, which can be an advantage in
warmer weather, especially for small-
er herds. Of course there are disadvan-
tages include a larger footprint, higher
out of pocket expense and handling
and disposal of the plastic. You must
have a good improved site for access
to the bags in poor weather.
For larger herds, bunker silos or
piles are the preferred storage op-
tion. The feed out is faster to mixer
wagons without waiting for mechani-
cal unloading equipment. This ad-
ditional storage is gained by adding
extra square footage of concrete or
asphalt. Each requires a prepared bed,
which takes some advanced planning.
The other option is to go higher with
the pile. This is limited by the feed
out equipment and the steep sides for
packing with tractors. Safety is a con-

plan to line up the services early as the
demand may be great this year. Re-
member that whole plant dry matter is
the best indicator of proper corn silage
maturity. Chop some samples to test
your corn. Some corn tasseled near the
fourth of July, will be ready in mid to
late August. Several good papers and
presentations are on the Kansas State
University silage web page found at
http://www.ksre.ksu.edu/pr_silage/.
They include silage management, for-
age storage economics, bagger advan-
tages and silo safety.
Storing high moisture corn is
preferred on many livestock farms
because then you do not have to pay
the drying costs. Again bags can be a
viable option for the extra crop stor-
age. Producers are cautioned that the
crop is about two weeks advanced
in maturity, and depending on the
weather, high moisture corn harvest
could quickly follow corn silage har-
vest. The advanced maturity of the
corn crop may allow some farms to dry
the corn crop for long term storage or
sales. Widening basis at many eleva-
tors may indicate the storage could be
tight with a big crop expected. Again
confirming this space in advance is
recommended.

sales can help pay off some of those
pesky bills still hanging around from

Germs at school are nothing to sneeze
at. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, nearly 22 million
school days are lost each year due to the com-
mon cold and flu. That may be why parents
worry as much about their children bringing

According to a study conducted by Kelton

Meeting called to order and opened with the Pledge by Supervisor Phyllis Larson at 7 p.m.
Members present: Supervisor Phyllis Larson, Clerk Colleen Stebbins, Treasurer Roy Kill-
inger, Trustee Dan Kanouse and Trustee Jim Radford.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA: Motion by Roy, second by Dan to approve the agenda,
voice vote, motion passed.
CLERK REPORT: Stand approved as read.
TREASURER REPORT: Fire Department $16,859.59, Municipal fund $33.794.88, Tax
account $5,781.16, and General checking $93,050.57 for a total of $149,486.20. To date, of
1700 parcels, 259 have paid summer tax. Total interest for July was $40.07. Please note that
taxes will rise due to voters’ passage of mileages August 3, 2010. Also note that in addition
to our Assessors and Board of Review process attending to ongoing P.R.E. corrections, our
county Treasurer’s office is doing their P.R.E. audits. County controller issued a letter to
Treasurers which was reported in newspaper seeking to insist that Township Treasurers be
more diligent in collecting personal taxes. Currently in Winfield Township, there is only one
outstanding which is Sprint on the cell tower. The County Treasurer is researching our op-
tions as to what property we can attach to collect. Treasurer report stand approved as read.
REPORTS: Assessor Jerrilyn Strong reported that she is out measuring, working on 1 pov-
erty exemption and 2 land divisions.
Fire Department: Fire Chief Bill Knapp report given by Colleen. Motion by Dan, second
by Roy to allow Bill, Jason, Roger, and Frankie to attend training at Maple Valley at a cost of

Zoning: Dave Kelsey reported 1 permit for July and complaint being taken care of.
Planning Commission: Reported by Dan motion to discontinue dangerous building ordi-
nance since not in the best interest of the township. They are working on new bylaws and the
next meeting September 27, 2010 at 7 p.m.
Park/Cemetery: Phyllis reported that Amble Cemetery trees need trimming.
Roads: Church Road from Amble to Krampe Park is completed.
Public Comment: Opened at 7:26 p.m. Phyllis Black, Chairman of road committee, dis-
cussed roads. David Dowd, Life Scout Troop 95, requested approval of his proposed eagle
project for improving Larson-Keeler Park in Amble. Motion by Jim, second by Roy to allow

at the Pierson Township Hall, 21156 Cannonsville Road, within the Township, con-
cerning two ordinances to amend the Township Zoning Ordinance.
The principal provisions of the amending ordinance are the following:
A. Alternative Energy Land Uses.
A new Chapter 18(A), Alternative Energy Land Uses, would be added to the
Zoning Ordinance. The Chapter includes provisions regulating the generation of
electric power from renewable resources, including wind energy systems, solar en-
ergy systems, stationary fuel cells, ground source heat pumps, geothermal sources
and other alternative energy facilities.
Solar energy systems for generating electric power on the land where such
facilities are located would be a permitted accessory use, subject to specified provi-
sions as to location, construction, height, potential adverse effects and other mat-
ters.
Stationary fuel cells would be a permitted accessory use, subject to stated
restrictions. Ground source heat pumps would be an available special land use,
under specified conditions. Geothermal energy systems for direct use would be a
special land use under stated conditions.
The amending ordinance includes other provisions regulating the generation of
electric power from renewable energy sources, including wind energy, solar energy
and other renewable resources.
B. Medical Marijuana Regulations
The second amending ordinance would add provisions to the Township Zoning
Ordinance regulating the cultivation, distribution and use of marijuana for medical
purposes, consistent with the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act of 2008 and the
Rules of the Michigan Community Health Department.
The ordinance would permit a qualifying patient to cultivate and use marijuana
for medical purposes only and would permit a designated primary caregiver to culti-
vate and distribute marijuana for medical purposes, subject to the limitations of the
Act and Rules. A Home Growth Facility would be a permitted land use in residential
districts, for cultivation and distribution of marijuana for medical purposes. A Home
Growth Facility would be subject to issuance of an annual permit by the Township.
Commercial cultivation or distribution of medical marijuana would not be permitted
in the residential zone districts.
A Growth and Distribution Center and a Commercial Growth and Distribution
Center, as defined in the ordinance, would be a permitted use in the Industrial
and Commercial zone districts, subject to the issuance of an annual permit by the
Township and site plan review by the Planning Commission. A facility providing
information and/or equipment with respect to medical marijuana use would be a
permitted use only by a designated primary caregiver in connection with a medical
marijuana Growth and Distribution Center or Commercial Growth and Distribution
Center, subject to issuance of an annual Township permit.
No activities with respect to the cultivation, distribution or use of marijuana
other than those permitted by the Act and the Rules would be permitted, and then
only in accordance with the provisions of the amending ordinance. The ordinance
includes other provisions relating to the cultivation, distribution and use of mari-
juana for medical purposes only, and only by qualifying patients and designated pri-
mary caregivers who are authorized under the Act and the Rules, under procedures
therein.
All interested persons may attend the public hearing and comment on the pro-
posed amending ordinances. Copies of the amending ordinances are on file at
the Pierson Township office at the above-stated address, and may be reviewed by
interested persons during Township office hours. Written comments concerning the
amending ordinances may be submitted to the Township office at the above-stated
address up to the time of the public hearing.

Again, High Cholesterol is Not a Disease
While reading the May, 08 issue of Clinical Advisor for Physician Assistants, I found an article about treatment
of high cholesterol. This referred to a 24 month study which followed 720 people who were being treated with

Lee and Nata Lou Hansen - Grand Marshals 2010 Trufant Area Chamber of Commerce
Lee and Nata Lou Hansen, long-time residents of the Trufant area, along with their sons Jeff and Brian, own and operate many acres of farm
land; growing many different crops and selling them to various companies. The three men graduated from Michigan State with degrees in Board of Directors 2010
farm management, food systems management and crop science. Their daughter Sue graduated from Central Michigan with a degree in
elementary education, teaching in Trufant and Lakeview schools. Nata Lou is also The Trufant Area Chamber of Commerce would like to express their Jubilee
a graduate of Michigan State in 1951 and taught in the Greenville school system appreciation to all of those who have volunteered their time to help make
