My mentors name is Krislyn Boswell,

currently working on becoming a
nurse practitioner

She works at Clear lake regional
medical center
What is ISM?
ISM is an advanced Course

professional in a Complete a journal each week
chosen course documenting mentorship
experiences
Complete an ISM professional
portfolio, a mid-term presentation,
and all of the required
assignments
Create a product and a
presentation at the professional
level and present to a panel of
graders
Project
Topic- C-sections and why they are done
I chose this topic because I find it interesting how someone women revive
multiple C-sections while other women never receive a C-section.
Key Points
Most common reasons for C-
sections

Emergency vs planned C-sections

Recovery after C-sections

Process before and after a C-

section

Increasing amount of C-sections

Different methods of C-sections

Reasons for C-sections
Women who have had a C-sections previously tend
to have them for the rest of their pregnancies
Preventing transferring illnesses to the baby, like HIV
or genital herpes
The baby might be too big to be born vaginally
Birth defects can cause defects in the shape or
function of certain structures in the baby
Patients who have had other surgeries on their uterus
Chronic health conditions, like diabetes and high
blood pressure
Placental problems, such as placental abruption or
placental previa
Emergency vs planned C-sections
There are fewer risks when the C-section is planned
Recovery time will be faster if planned
There is less panic and rushing
Since an emergency C-section is rushed, the procedure is
faster
Recovery After C-sections

The mother will be able to leave the hospital after 3 to 4 days or

longer if there were complications
The body will need 6 weeks to fully heal
Waiting for the right time to start moving around after a C-section is
important
The uterus will begin to shrink causing the mother to have cramps,
which can be more painful due to the incision
Scarring will depend on how well the incision is taken care of and
the mothers genetics
Getting the right medication will help reduce discomfort
Good nutrition after a C-section will help the mother get stronger
faster
Process before and after a C-section
It is preferred for patients to not eat
anything 12 hours before the
surgery
Patients must receive fluids before
and after the surgery
Preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis
decreases risk of endometritis by
76%
Documentation of the fetal position
and its estimated weight should be
done before the surgery
Increasing Amount of C-sections

Current Event Article: C-sections might be relaxing the evolutionary pressure

against big babies
women who were delivered by C-section due to obstructed birth are at
higher risk for having c-sections for the same reason
The mother passes the gene onto the child
This is leading to an increase in C-sections done
Methods of C-sections
Traditional C-section
Long, v ertical incision in the midline of abdomen
Allows for a large amount of space to deliv er the baby
Not commonly used today because it is associated with post-surgical complications
The incision weakens abdominal muscles and increases risk of hernia

Lower uterine segment C-section (LUCS)

Horizontal incision just abov e pubic hairline and the bladder
Risk of bleeding and other complications are minimal
Surgical wounds heal easier than after a traditional
Most commonly used method today

Caesarean hysterectomy
Involves remov ing the uterus during the same procedure as the C-section
needed when there is too much post-deliv ery bleeding or the placenta cannot be separated
from the uterus
Artifacts

This form is for the baby

Includes birth certificate and
information about the baby
Used to send the
placenta to the lab
Usually used when
there is a placental
abruption
This packet explains how
to monitor and manage
fetal heat rates
Admit form must be filled
out before patient can be
admitted
Once this is turned in the
admitting process is started
These are monitors that
show the mothers
contractions and how
well the baby is
receiving oxygen
They are at the nurses
station so that they can
monitor their patients at
all times
This form shows the people
who can come visit the
patient
It also shows the rules of
visitation
These are consent
forms that the
mother must sign
regarding the baby
These are general
consent forms that
every patient must sign
These are the consent
forms regarding the
mother
The mother fills out
information about
herself
This is an informational
packet about surgical
incision infections
It answers the most
frequently asked questions
Product

Educational booklet
Explains reasons why C-sections are performed,
different method, and recovery after a C-section
Conclusion
My mentorship has been very educational. I was able to watch multiple
deliveries. I watched and learned the process before and after the
delivery. I also learned how they take care of the babies and how they get
their vitals.

This project has allowed me to understand better why C-section are done
and the process before and after the surgery.
I would like to thank
Krislyn for being my mentor and teaching me
throughout this semester
Graders for taking time and coming to my
presentation
Mrs. Click for choosing me to be in this class
My Mom and Dad for helping through this
process
