Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Lets Talk About Light

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed:
SKE1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate observations about time patterns (day to night and night
to day) and objects (sun, moon, stars) in the day and night sky. a. Ask questions to classify objects
according to those seen in the day sky, the night sky, and both.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Global Collaborator
Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:
Journey North

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom (Minimum 2 paragraph overview):
During our discussions about transitioning from day to night and night to day, I would incorporate a
discussion about how long we have sunlight during the day and how that changes throughout the year. We
will brainstorm about when the longest days of light and the shortest days of light are. From there, we will
discuss how this isnt always the same around the world. How can we find out how long other peoples days
of light are? This will allow for a perfect transition into the project.

The Journey North website has a space specifically intended for sunlight and seasons where the length of
daylight can be recorded and reported to the online data base. I will task my class with finding out how many
hours of daylight we have each day in our area and reporting it on Journey North. They will then research the
length of daylight in other parts of the world that are different from ours and be prepared to share that
information with the class.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Students would need access to a computer or tablet.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Through Journey North, students are able to share their findings to an online data base and
collaborate their information with others around the world.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students will be responsible for recording the length of
daylight that we have on their own, which allows them to create their own data.
c. Higher-order thinking: Students will need to determine a method for finding the amount of daylight
on their own and record it on the website.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Their data is
being entered on a website that allows other students, teachers, and scientists to access their findings
around the world.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

Students would not record their names so privacy would not be an issue. Parent consent would not be
necessary since the amount of given information is allowed. As long as the website is not blocked by the
district, no policies are being violated with this lesson.
