One motive for ensuring that this development occurs is the sharp realization of

my colleagues and myself that in the present political and social climate, occasions for
ideological critique are pressed upon our lives daily. (1987: 1)

crtica ideolgica presionan nuestra vida cotidiana

Why did I take a critical turn? Because I was unhappy with the dangerous state of
affairs created by the cold war, and the build-up of nuclear weapons in Europe, in the
1980s. I felt there was a real danger that established ways of talking about war, conflict
and arms control could lead to global destruction. Of Course, I did not think that simple
scholars writing articles on discourse could stop all this, but I did and do think that talk and
text are the fundamental to everything that human societies do, so it is essential to at least
try to understand it.

Critical Linguistics emerged from our writing of Language and Control as an

instrumental linguistics very much of that description. We formulated an analysis of public
discourse, an analysis designed to get at the ideology coded implicitly behind the overt
propositions, to examine it particularly in the context of social formations. The tools for this
analysis were an eclectic selection of descriptive categories suited to the purpose:
specially those structures identified by Halliday as ideational and interpersonal, of course,
but we also drew on other linguistic traditions, as for example when we needed to talk
about speech acts or transformations (1987: 2)
