An oil system is a geological system that encompasses the related hydrocarbon-generating rocks
and includes all the elements and geological processes that are essential for the existence of a
hydrocarbon accumulation.
The system describes the interdependent elements and the processes that constitute the
functional unit that creates the accumulations of hydrocarbons. The oil system includes the
maturation zone of the parent rock, the natural distribution network, and the genetically related
discovered oil events. The presence of oil is proof that a system exists.
Reservoir rock: must be quite permeable so that the oil flows freely.
Rock seal: must be sufficiently impermeable to prevent the oil from escaping.
Trap formation.
