What is an AC/DC Machine?

AC machines are motors that convert AC electric energy to mechanical energy and
generators that convert mechanical energy to AC electric energy. There are two
major classes of AC machines, synchronous and induction machines. The field current
of the synchronous machines (motors and generators) is supplied by a separate DC
power source while the field current of induction machines is supplied by magnetic
induction (transformer action) into the field windings.
A DC machine is an electro-mechanical energy conversion device. The two types of
DC machines are DC generator and DC motor. A DC generator converts mechanical
power into DC electrical power, whereas, a DC motor converts DC electrical power
into mechanical power.

Applications of DC Machines
Electrolytic processes
Welding
Sewing machine (series DC motor high starting torque)
Vacuum cleaner (series DC motor)
Battery charging (Shunt wound dc generators)
Applications of AC Machines

As an engineering student, what do you think is the essence of understanding and

learning AC/DC Machines in your chosen field?
For me, the essence of learning and understanding AC/DC machines is for us to have
further knowledge that would help us in the future in designing different machines
requiring AC/DC machines. It would also help us to cope up with other professionals
that we would be working with.
