Reader Summary

Reader: Kendall
Grade: 3G
Tutor: Ms. Lampe
Date: September 15

Quantitative Summary:
In the first meeting, the tutor was working toward providing the reader with multiple texts at
different levels in order to find a variety of assessment results. The assessment results were
aimed at three different levels: frustrational, instructional, and independent. Although the goal
was to find a text level for all three, the reader did not reach a frustrational or independent level
with his work, but reached an instructional level with three very different texts.
At the instructional level his first text was a 23. Kendall scored 98% in accuracy. His retell
scored a 2 out of 12, bringing his overall level down from independent to an instructional level.
His comprehension scored 5 out of 5. The reader had a self-correction rate of 1:1.8.
Kendalls next instructional text was a level 26. He was at 97% for accuracy, and scored 1.5 out
of 12 on retelling. Comprehension was 5 out of 5 again. Self-correction rate was at 1:2.7.
The final instructional level text Kendall read was a 28. He read with 95% accuracy. He had a
self-correction rate of 1:4.3. Retelling was 1.5 out of 12 and comprehension was at a 2 out of 5.

Qualitative Summary:
At the instructional level text, Kendall relied on a combination of visual and semantic
information. He made substitutions for unfamiliar words, for example: consitting for consisting,
and tails for tongues. His errors were mostly substitutions, with the exception of one omission
and one appeal/told. His errors were brought on by visual cues, and the meaning of the text was
often altered by his substitutions.
Retelling, as stated in the quantitative portion of the report, was extremely frustrational. His
retelling fell between 1 and 2 out of 12. His comprehension, however, scored 5 out of 5 on both
23 and 26 leveled texts, and then scored 2 out of 5 on the 28 leveled text. When he is reading
about a familiar topic his comprehension appears to be higher.
Kendalls fluency overall received a score of 3 out of 5. For intonation and stress on words he
received a 2 out of 5. His pausing was given a 3 out of 5. His highest score on the fluency rating
scale was a 4 out of 5 for rate.

Reader Summary:
He is a very skilled reader, but is only motivated by informational texts focused on animals and
sports- topics he has background knowledge on. When he was presented with an informational
text about topics he has limited background on, decoding and comprehension were difficult for
him. He had fairly adequate vocabulary knowledge. He is strong with decoding words and
pronunciation, but lacks understanding the definitions of words without scaffolding or deeper
prompting.

Goals for the Reader:

My goal for the reader would be to increase comprehension skills as well as expression when
reading, and build a stronger pace while reading. He has a lot of potential to be a proficient
reader, and hopefully with the right motivation and strategies - he will become one!
