Young Democrats of WWU: learn about politics

BELLINGHAM, Wash. The Young Democrats of Western Washington University has

invited guest speakers to come talk about The Whatcom County jail tax on Nov.1 at 6:30 p.m. in

Miller Hall at WWU. You are invited to join us and learn more about it.

There will be a public forum in the WWU campus to tackle the hot topic. Wendy Jones,

the Whatcom County Jail Chief Corrections Deputy, is a staunch supporter of the jail tax pitted

against Lisa McShane, a political consultant working with the local democrats will be the guest

speaker to discuss about the jail tax.

Last year, voters rejected a plan to increase local sales taxes to fund a new Whatcom

County jail. The same voters may be required to approve the same plan this year, in 2017.

However, this time there is a change in who will collect the generated funds.

One proposal suggests all the raised funds to be channeled to the building and operation

of a new corrective facility in Whatcom County. Another proposal would have some of the

revenue shared among the cities with the expectation that they split the building and operation

expenses.

In 2015, the proposition for jail sales tax failed on the ballot by 1660 votes. County and

city leadership hope to reconcile their divergent opinions and get a successful vote count in next

years ballot measure.

Would Whatcom County voters endorse the increase in local sales tax to fund the jail

initiative? The public forum will be sponsored by the Young Democrats of Western Washington

University.
