Genetic Mutations and Their Catergories
Project 2, Deliverable 3
Genetic Mutation
Genetic mutations are very rare and only occur in somatic and germ cells. There are
two different types of genetic mutations; point mutations and insertion/deletion
mutations. Point mutations usually result in either a silent, missense, or nonsense
mutation. While insertion/deletion mutations always result in a frameshift mutation.
Insertion: ACGTGCG
Mutated Stand: A C A G A A T T C C C G
Deletion: ACGC G
A point mutation occurs when one base pair in a DNA
sequence is changed to another. There are three diverse When a base pair is inserted in a DNA sequence it
types of subcategories that can results from a point is called an insertion mutation. If a base pair is
mutation. deleted in a DNA sequence then it is called a
deletion mutation.
