Cooperative Lesson Plan

I. Describe the Class

4th grade with 25 students; five students are learning disabled, one student is gifted, and

one student is a second language learner.

II. Subject/Skill:

Science lesson on the human skeletal system. Identifying major components of the

skeletal system and individual bones.

III. Objectives

Students will be able to identify components of the skeletal system with 85% accuracy.

Students will be able to work together using the Jigsaw II learning strategy and recall the

information to the other members of their group the key term they became an expert in

learning.

Students will be able to complete a skeletal worksheet and a provided word bank with

90% accuracy.

IV. Procedures

i. Students will be able to recognize the components of the skeletal system. Students

will be able to define terms and will be able to identify bones on themselves.

ii. Review Prerequisites: This is the first lesson for biology; the rest of the lesson

will branch off of the skeletal system. The purpose of this lesson is to know how

the skeletal system works and apply this to future lessons.

Key terms: cartilage, joint, tissue, tendon, ligament

iii. Modeling: Open with introduction to the skeletal system and how it will apply to

future lessons and explain its importance. Lesson will be done on a PowerPoint.

Students will also receive handout with information they can reference.

Slide 1: Introduction slide

Slide2: Opening Question: What is a function of our skeletal system? (Open floor

for classroom discussion.)

Slide 3: Joints and Tissues: introduce key terms; cartilage, joint, tissue, tendon,

and ligament. Also provide examples of joints and where to find them. Have

students try and do some actions without using joints.

Slide 4: Facts to Know, students are not expected to remember these facts.

Students will also not be tested on material.

Slide 5: Discussion question: Is there anything we can do so make sure we have a

healthy and strong skeleton? (Open floor for classroom discussion.)

Slide 6: Diagram of skeleton and have most commonly known bones labeled.

iv. Guided Practice: Students will get into groups of five, so there should be a total of

five groups. Using the cooperative learning strategy Jigsaw II students will focus

on one of the key terms. Each student will select a key term, and no two students

in a group can have the same term. After they have selected their term they will

meet with other who have the same term and discuss what they know. I will meet

each group individually to ensure they have the correct information. After

everyone has the same information they will meet back with their group and teach
each other what they know. Students ensure learning the material when they have

to teach others the material they know.

v. Independent practice: Students will be expected to complete a work sheet, a word

bank will be available, with 90% accuracy.

VI. Grouping Structures

Classroom will split into nine groups of three students. I will select which students will

be in each group.

VII. Modifications

Learning disabled students will get constant recognition to stay focused and avoid

distractions. Lesson will be taught at a slower pace because it is a new topic and concept.

LD students will be asked questions with proper timing and enough time will be given to

them to answer. If required LD students will get additional time to complete individual

assignments, or have the opportunity to take it home for homework.

English learner students will be given information in native language and a copy in

English, depending on students needs. They will also get more time on individual

assignment if needed, or they can take it home and complete it for homework.
The gifted students will have a worksheet that will have additional questions that they can

answer. For example, questions about what other systems the skeletal system works in

conjunction with.

VIII. Assessment:

i. At the end, I will ask if any of the students had any questions or if they needed

help with anything. Then I will close the lesson with some review questions, I will

see best fitting to use the reward system for this portion. After key parts of the

material is covered in full length and I am confident the students know the

material I will move on to the next component of class.

ii. For homework students will be allowed to take the worksheet home if they did not

complete it. Students will be allowed to turn in assignment if it is completed.
