Lesson Title: Branches of Government

Objectives:
1- Students will be able to classify the 3 branches of government
2- Students will understand the separation of powers

State Standards:
USG-2.1 Summarize core principles of United States government, including limited government,
federalism, checks and balances, separation of powers, rule of law, popular sovereignty,
republicanism, individual rights, freedom, equality, and self government.

Context- The reason for this lesson is to broaden the students knowledge on the United States
government. Understand that one branch can check another so one branch doesnt have to much
power or full power. Coming into the lesson students will already know the general information
about our government. Ex: President, Congress, and House.

government and their powers. I will talk about how the checks and balances system works. I will
talk to the students how one branch is no more powerful than the other.
Collaborative (5 Mins): Students will watch Youtube video on the branches of
government. Then after the video their groups will talk about what theyve learned in the video.

Independent Digital (10 minutes): Students will then advance to doing a quiz on their
ipad that I have designed using the app Kahoot!. Students will join the group I have created and
answer the questions on their ipads as the questions come across the smartboard in front of the
room. The ending will show me the top 3 and who understood the assignment the most.

Closure (5 minutes): Here I will talk about the homework assignment and hand it out for
the students to complete at home. If time allows then they can work on it in class.
