1) INTRODUCTION:-
Car jack is a device used to lift up the cars while changing the tires during an emergency. Car
jacks are available at the market has some disadvantages such as requiring more energy to
operate, are not suitable for women and cannot be used on the uneven surface. The purpose of
this project is to modify the design of the existing car jack in terms of its functionality and also
human factors considerations. To optimize the existing design, the hand lifter has been replaced
by the use of lever connected with motor as it can reduce energy usage.

A jack is a mechanical device which uses a screw thread or a hydraulic cylinder to lift heavy
loads or apply great linear forces. In most of the powerful jacks, hydraulic power is used to
provide more lift over greater distances. Mechanical jacks usually have lifting capacity ranging
from 1.5 tons to 3 tons.

Hydraulic jacks are mechanical devices used to lift heavy loads, vehicles, weight equipment or
apply great forces using hydraulic fluid as the main source of power. These are widely used in
automotive, industrial and construction industries. These are compact in size, portable and
capable of exerting great forces. It consists of two cylinders of different sizes which are
connected together by a pipe and a hydraulic fluid or oil.
These can be segmented into two types:
1. Bottle Hydraulic Jack
2. Floor Hydraulic Jack.
Bottle Hydraulic Jack: In these the piston is in a vertical position and it supports a bearing pad
which touches the object being lifted. Bottle Hydraulic are most appropriate for lifting vehicles
(cars, trucks, SUVs, trailers), houses and other heavy objects.
In a Floor Jacks, the piston is in a horizontal piston and there is a long arm which provides the
vertical motion to a lifting pad. There are wheels and castors in floor jacks.
2)Literature Review:-
Screw jacks are being used for many years now for lifting a vehicle in case of tyre
puncture or other malfunctions. The manually operated hydraulic jacks which follows the
lever principle are used only in automobile workshops. Introduction of an automatic
hydraulic jack can be of great help especially for car owners as the lifting of the car
would be done by the jack with the press of a button only. Generally hydraulic jacks are
used for shop work rather than as an emergency jack to be carried in a vehicle. Use of
these jacks are not designed for lifting vehicles as it requires more than the usual care
in selecting ground conditions, the jacking point on a vehicle, and to ensure stability
when the jack is extended. In this project we will try to minimize these anomalies.
The working of a hydraulic jack is based on Pascals law which states that the
intensity of pressure is transmitted equally in all directions through a mass of fluid at
rest. The jack uses a liquid which is compressible that is forced into a cylinder by a
pump plunger. Oil is used since it is self lubricating and stable. When the plunger pulls
back, it draws oil out of the reservoir through a suction check valve into the pump
chamber. When the plunger moves forward, it pushes the oil through a discharge check
valve into the cylinder. The suction valve ball is within the chamber and opens with
each draw of the plunger. The discharge valve ball is outside the chamber and opens
when the oil is pushed into the cylinder. At this point the suction ball within the
chamber is forced shut and oil pressure builds in the cylinder.

Applications of Hydraulic Jack

Building of field erected storage tanks

Increasing tank capacity by adding shell rings or courses
Lifting of car
Repair or replacement of tank bottom plate
Repair to tank foundation
Erection of other circular structures such as reactor shields in nuclear power stations, etc.

Advantages of Hydraulic Jack

Hydraulic jack is fluid filled. They work quick manually or electrically.

They do not require much work to use manually.
Hydraulics Systems use fluids to transfer energy, fluids work better then solids as they can take
different shape.
They generally suffer from less damage due to hard parts rubbing together.
3) Methodology:-
In automobile garage some difficult methods are adopted in lifting heavy vehicles for

reconditioning, hence button based hydraulic jack has been designed, such that the vehicle

can be lifted from the floor land without application of any impact force. The fabrication

part of it has been considered with almost care for its simplicity and economy, such that

this can be accommodated as one of the essential tools on automobile garages.

In hydraulic jack chamber in which large cylinder is placed and ram or larger piston is

placed and hydraulic fluid is surrounded the ram in the chamber. Using small cylinder with

small piston which is connected to larger cylinder with help of pipe and hydraulic fluid

is also connected with the small cylinder with the help of pipe. Plunger which is connected

small piston and two valves which are used for suction and discharging hydraulic fluid to

the cylinders.

The D.C. motor is coupled with the hydraulic jack by connecting rod. The levers rotation

depends upon the rotation of D.C. motor.

Our mechanism is mainly used for lifting the car. The mechanism is powered by the battery.

The control of the mechanism will be provided at the user hand. When the operator presses the

switch, the battery will run the hydraulic pump. The pump will press the oil from the reservoir to

the control valve. The flow of oil to the

double acting hydraulic cylinder can be

controlled with the help of this control

valve. When control valve directs the oil

to the cylinder for a lifting stroke the

pressure will be imparted to the piston and

the stroke will take place.

Then the piston will start lifting the car

on reaching the ground level. For the

down movement of a lifted car the user

can again operate the control valve which will direct the flow of oil to the other side of cylinder

and the stroke will be imparted with pressurized oil. After operation the user will press the off

button and that will cut-off the electrical power to the motor. This will stop the pump and the

circulation of oil in the system.

Motor Specification:-

Motor is of 12 v D.C

Motor power = 300 W = 0.4 HP

Motor rpm = 3000 rpm

Motor torque = 1 N.m

4) Calculation:-
Load (W) = 06 ton (60kN)

OPERATING PRESSURE (p) = 25 M Pa

Lift range (L) = 20 cm

Man effort put on the handle (e) = 20 Kg

No. of strokes for lifting load (n) = 150

Factor of safety = 5

5) Progress in Work:-

1. Literature review.

2. CAD model of the hydraulic jack.

3. Estimation of cost and required materials.

4. Survey about the materials and resource available.
