Read Aloud Lesson Plans

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss lesson plan: The Lorax is a great book to read to children because

it is fun, creative, and promotes environmental awareness. This book will help students

understand more about air and water pollution. The lesson plan [located in the link

Clean Water for Elirose by Ariah Fine: This is a great book to help kindergartners

understand that not everyone in the world has access to clean water. It is a great and

powerful story with an inspiring ending. The end of the book offers great discussion

questions to ask the class after reading the book. It also provides writing, math, and

The Water Princess by Susan Verde: This is a story about the scarcity of water in a small

African village. The story is told from a young African princesss perspective, which will

help students relate to the story. After the read-aloud a class discussion will be held

about innovative ways to provide people with clean drinking water. [K.11]
Things That Float and Things That Dont by David A. Adler: This is a fun story that I would

read as an introduction to teaching the K.5 SOL. This story teaches students what

objects float and at the end of the book it explains the reason why. I would then

introduce an activity where students would predict if certain items would sink or float

and then have them test the objects themselves. The link below provides a detailed

lesson of investigating science through inquiry. The lesson provides learning goals,

Water by Frank Asch: A simple story that goes over the various forms of water with

picture examples. This is a great book to help students understand that water exists in

various forms all around the world. The link below provides various activities that could

be incorporated in a kindergarten classroom after the read-aloud. These activities are all

water related and safe to implement in the classroom! These hands-on activities will

help students gain a better understanding of various forms of water in addition to

Water: Up, Down, and All Around by Natalie M. Rosinsky: This book teaches students

about evaporation, condensation, dew and frost, and the three states of water. The

illustrations are appealing and helpful for children. [K.5]

The EARTH Book by Todd Parr: This book encourages children to do little things for our

Earth to make a big difference. The book mentions things like writing on both sides of

the paper, bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, and more! This is a simple book
that would spark a lot of ideas for children to help keep our environment clean and to

Water is your best friend lesson plan: This is a kindergarten lesson designed to teach

students the importance of water, and how much of our bodies are made up of water.

This is an extremely detailed lesson that could be modified or kept the same. The lesson

involves the children will draw and color in a life-sized body to represent the proportion

Walking Water Rainbow Activity: This activity is fun, creative, and hands-on. It shows

students liquids ability to flow upwards, against gravity. A perfect, fun, hands-on lesson

Recycling- Reduce, recycle, reuse- Lesson Plan: In this lesson, students will be

introduced to the concepts of reducing, reusing and recycling. They will learn new

vocabulary, read labels, and connect environmental concepts to their everyday

experiences. Students will perform a skit highlighting what they have learned about how

Trash, Trash, Trash! Lesson Plan: In this lesson students will investigate a bag of trash to

find out how much of the contents of the bag actually needs to go to the landfill.

Students will create two class posters that show which items are recyclable and which

ones are not. They will complete a math activity to determine how many bags of trash

up the planet by sorting recyclable trash. The game has students sort the materials by

differences between solids and liquids by allowing them to do things like, put chocolate
