Running head: DELEGATION PROJECT 1

DELEGATION PROJECT 2

Delegation Project

The Planning Process

After researching Florida Board of Nursing policy regarding UAP scope of practice, I

understood that UAPs are allowed preform more tasks than CNAs can when trained and

supervised properly. Each facility has its own guidelines and rules regarding tasks that can be

delegated to UAP. In Baycare facilities PCTs are trained to do ECGs, insert and remove Foleys,

and do accuchecks. While composing UAP interview questions, I asked how UAPs deal with

stress on the job and with difficult family members. I also inquired about any problems regarding

UAPs scope of practice. In a UAP sample report I included information that would be vital for

UAP job performance, such as orientation of the patient, frequency of vital signs, diet,

accucheck, allergies, code status, what specimens needed, and how patient ambulates and uses

the bathroom.

Implementation Process

I was able to delegate accuchecks and specimen collection to UAPs during my shifts. I used

my sample report to tell UAP about my patients in the beginning of the shift, highlighting tasks

that needed to be completed during the shift. I used 4 QESN skills during the delegation. I

demonstrated commitment to teams goals as I pointed out patients who are at risk for falls and

patients who need to have daily weight done. During the shift I asked UAP to help me with

repositioning patient in bed, therefore using the skill of initiating request for help. I also used

appropriate communication with UAPs to ensure that I do not come across superior or

unfriendly, but rather helpful and down to earth. I made a point to demonstrate my own

strengths and weaknesses with UAPs in order to remain sincere and open.

Feedback from the UAPs and Preceptor

DELEGATION PROJECT 3

UAPs mostly expressed how much they like to work with helpful and considerate nurses

that not only want help from UAPs, but are also willing to give a helping hand to UAPs as

well. My preceptor used to be a PCT herself, so she expressed that it is important for the nurse to

follow up the delegated task in order to ensure that no intervention is needed, and not to overuse

delegation when UAP is busy.

Lessons Learned

It is important to treat everyone with respect on the job. Some nurses may look down to

UAPs, which may cause UAPs not to share vital information with the nurses, or rob UAPs of

enthusiasm in helping such nurses. If UAP knows that the nurse goes an extra mile to make

UAPs job easier, this UAP will go above and beyond in helping the nurse as well. I also realized

that it is very important to know hat tasks UAPs are allowed to preform, as well as to follow up

every task one delegates, so no vital information is missed and no miscommunication occurs.
