Writing Assignment Design

I. Objectives/goals: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.10 range of reading/text complexity;


CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis
of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining
where the text leaves matters uncertain; CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.4 Produce clear and
coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task,
purpose, and audience; CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.5 Develop and strengthen writing as
needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on
addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience; CCSS.ELA-
Literacy.W.11-12.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update
individual or shared writing products in response to ongoing feedback, including new arguments
or information; CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.4 Present information, findings, and supporting
evidence, conveying a clear and distinct perspective, such that listeners can follow the line of
reasoning, alternative or opposing perspectives are addressed, and the organization,
development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and a range of formal
and informal tasks.
The student will be able to identify skills needed for a specific task (arising out of a
situation in fictional literature) and develop a written resume for a fictional character using
strong rhetorical choices to emphasize his/her strengths and capabilities related to the job at
hand. The student will be able to conceive questions as a job interviewer and responses as an
applicant, all the while using word choice and syntax to mimic the voice of the character.
The student will be able to produce a professional-looking web-based portfolio/resume.

II. Context for the class

This assignment will be for 12th Grade British Literature

Prerequisites: students will have read and discussed the textbook selection from Beowulf,

as well as Anglo-Saxon culture and the Epic genre


III. Starting to show awareness and understanding of discourse

Students will consider audience when making rhetorical choices in the creation of a

resume and personal website.

Students will have to closely examine word choice in and syntax in Beowulf in order to

try on his voice

not sure how to classify resume and website as a type of composition maybe

professional writing? will need to examine terminology for that discourse

IV. Beginning evidence of understanding of the students perspective

handout will have a step by step process, but will also remind students that the whole

process is recursive

one difficulty will be that students may not ever have written a resume

**Have exemplar texts ready to go at the very beginning of the assignment**

V. Beginning ideas about assessment

Areas to include in rubric:

Neatness/Professionalism in resume and website

Accurate representation of characters skills (with examples for support)

Trying on Beowulfs voice

Rhetorical choices that are clearly tailored to the audience

Grammar/Mechanics

what medium would be best for creating the resume?

what free website builder would suit the purposes of this exercise? Wix? Weebly?

Wordpress? Arent there any without Ws?
