REPORT ON
1.0 INTRODUCTION
On the request of Mr Nandana Karunasena, Deepwell Drilling & Soil Technologies(PVT) Ltd
conducted a soil investigations for proposed boxing and gymnastic court for Royal College-
Colombo 7.
The suggestions and recommendations given in this report are based on the information gathered
from the client, site reconnaissance, field investigations, laboratory soil classification and analysis.
Scope of the investigations is mainly in accordance with the client and is as follows:
Advancing five numbers (5 Nos.) of boreholes at the site using core drilling
technique to establish the soil profile at the site (covering the proposed site).

3.0 PROPOSED STRUCTURE
According to the information furnished by the Client, it is intended to construct buildings at the
proposed land. (Plan view of the proposed building is attached below)
4.1 GENERAL
Field investigations were commenced on the 28th of December 2012 and fieldwork was
completed in twelve days.
All field and laboratory tests were carried out in accordance with the following specifications.
BS 5930 British Standard for Site Investigation.
Earth manual published by the United States Bureau of Reclamation.
The field work was carried out under the supervision of officer in charge who was responsible for
locating the bore holes, nominating and directing all sampling, providing field logs of the soil
profiles encountered and all other field tests.
5.1 DRILLING
The objective of drilling is to obtain geological and geotechnical information and to understand
the sub-soil conditions. Drilling was carried out by implementing one drilling crew.
Boreholes were carried out using rotary core drilling technique with Heavy drilling machine and
NX size diamond core bits through the overburden.

5.2 SAMPLING & CLASSIFICATION
All samples were collected under the supervision of the site officer.
Disturbed
Disturbed soil samples from boreholes were collected at every 1.0 m depth intervals by using split
spoon sampler having a sharp cutting edge at its lower end is forced into the ground by dynamic
impact.
Standard penetration test was conducted at every 1.0m depth intervals in all boreholes in
accordance with the Test No 19 BS 1377 -1975 in order to obtain continues strength profile within
each borehole.
The sampler then driven into the ground with blows from the 63.5 kg hammer falling through 760
mm.
The sampler is first seated in position by driving 150 mm in the soil, and the number of blows
required to affect this seating were recorded.
The sampler is then driven a further 300 mm (or until 50 blows not including the seating drive),
and the number of blows required for 300 mm penetration after the seating drive were recorded.
The total number of blows required for the 300 mm penetration after the seating drive is termed
the Standard Penetration Resistance (SPT), N.
Disturbed soil samples retained in the SPT split tube were collected for visual soil classification
and for necessary laboratory tests according to BS-1377.

Graphical representation of SPT values are given in logs of boreholes in Appendix I. For the
purpose of preparing the logs of boreholes, compactness/consistency was classified according to
the following tables.
Engineering logs of the boreholes along with the explanation sheets describing the terms and
symbols used and the SPT values are presented in Appendix I.
Ground water table of the boreholes has been observed during the period of drilling work and
record the logs of boreholes.
The general observations from borehole information are summarized in Table 6.1 below.
