Forms of Linear Equations

Essential Question: How can you use different forms of linear

equations to solve real-world problems? Key Vocabulary

For one taxi company, the cost y in dollars of a ride is a linear
madre)
function of the miles traveled x. The initial charge is $2.00, and
the charge per mile is $0.40. Identify the slope and y-intercept of
the graph that represents this situation and interpret what they mean. Then write
an equation in slope-intercept form and use it to find the cost of riding 15 miles.

The rate of change is $0.40 per mile, so the slope m is 0.4.

The initial cost is the cost to travel 0 miles, $2.00, so the y-intercept b is 2.
So, the equation in slope-intercept form is y = 0.4x + 2.
To find the cost of riding 15 miles, substitute 15 for x and simplify.
y = 0.4x + 2
= 0.4(15) + 2
= 6 + 2
= 8
(15, 8) is a solution of the equation, and the cost of riding 15 miles is $8.

KEY EXAMPLE (Lesson 6.3)

Write an equation in standard form for the line that contains (-3, 4) and (5, 0).

Find the slope using the given points.

x 2 - x 1 = 5 - (-3) = 8 = - 2
________ ____ __

Substitute the slope and the coordinates of either of the points in point-slope form.

y - y 1 = m(x - x 1)

Rewrite in standard form. x + 2y = 5

MODULE PERFORMANCE TASK

Who Wins the Race?

Jamal and Kendra are running in a 26.2-mile marathon. Jamals friend is recording
his times in the table as shown, while Kendras friend uses a scatter plot to show her
progress. If both runners continue at the same average pace, who will arrive at the
finish line first? How much longer will it take for the other person to finish?
